The Ship First question to answer is what type of ship you all would like to fly. I've got two options to present and the first is the good old Firefly herself. She's rugged, she's easy to maintain, and her overall cost of ownership is quite low. But you already know her. The second is the Kwai Su Nyao (Swift Ox). She's a little bigger than the Firefly and about half-again as fast. She has a reputation for being thirsty, and her oversized engines can run through coolant pretty fast. There are a lot of them still operating on the Rim, so parts are easy enough to come by, but they're all starting to show their age. Lesser minds might think her a hulking peice of go-se, but to the enlightened individual, she has a certain beauty all her own. This is essentially an esthetic decision. The Ox requires more fuel than the Firefly, but she's faster, increasing turnaround, and she has a bigger cargo bay, meaning bigger possible loads. Whichever ship you choose, it will be next to impossible to keep flying hauling legitimate cargo. Both models are ubiquitous on the rim, so it's basically a question of whether or not you'd like to fly a Firefly. I'd like to have the decision made by 5pm tomorrow (Thursday), so weigh in. The Captain Looking over the characters, the only one who was obviously designed to fill a leadership role is Kai Nielsen. Barring any serious objections, we'll just name him captain and move on to other matters. The Crew Now that we have the pieces, we have to bring them together. So here's the scenario: it's the morning of May 28th, the sixth anniversary of Unification Day, and Kai Neilson is on his way to the Eavesdown Docks to get his first look at the ship he supposedly won in a card game the night before. He has the ship's registration in his hands, but he's got his doubts - it seems too good to be true (especially considering he isn't really very good at Tall) - but when he steps down from the rickshaw and catches his first sight of her.... Etc., etc., etc.. Complications ensue. What he actually won will prove to be somewhat less than it initially seems, but we'll come to that in the appropriate time. The question is, how do we get everyone to this point. The way I see it, there are three potential clusters in which the characers may find themselves at the start of play. 1) Ships Crew. The ship will have at least a partial crew, but things have not been going well recently and many posts may have been abandoned. The Engineer should probably already be aboard, and Bastian, having rented a "stateroom" or shuttle or whatever. The reaction of the rough and tumble crowd to the presence of a dilettante will be whatever it will be, but he will have been the only reliable source of income the ship has had in some time. More on that later. 2) Kai's Crew. It's possible that some others will already be acquainted with Kai and come with him. What he and they have been doing up to this point is an open question, but they may have been crewing another ship together. Or whatever. 3) Looking for work. The rest could be checking the port register, looking for available postings. So talk amongst yourselves. Decide where your characters are and who they know, and then please make the necessary changes on your character's background section in the RG thread. Starship Economics 101 I'll be adding to the House Rules section over the next few days. There will be a section on Starship Economics which should prove particularly interesting.
