Just because I'm feeling chatty, here's a high-powered character I cooked up for a high-fantasy BESM game I'm joining soon: (he's 45 points) Radlin Tattercloak, an elderly, eccentric old wizard who wanders the lands. He is dressed in a travel-beaten old cloak and hood, and is typically tapping down the road while leaning on his cane. Across his back is strapped a massive book that contains a great store of magical knowledge and old lore in general. Body 4 ( <-- Human average) Mind 8 Soul 9 Health 65 (5*body+5*soul) Energy 85 (5*mind+5*soul) Shock Value 13 (body+soul) Combat Values: Attack 7 ((body+mind+sou)/3), Defense 5 (Attack-2) Attributes ------------ Dynamic Sorcerery lvl 6 (Essentially, this puts Radlin among the most powerful spellcasters in the world, roughly in the class of Lina Inverse at the very beginning of The Slayers. The Dynamic Sorcery ability is the method whereby BESM characters gain magical power that is general-purpose rather than spell-based. Think Mage: The Ascension) Sixth Sense lvl 2 (Detect Magic, Detect Spirits) Item of Power lvl 1 (Radlin's Cane: +50 Energy) Highly Skilled lvl 1 (+10 skill points to represent vast knowledge of old legends, myths, history, etc) Defects --------- -1 Not So Strong (+2 difficulty vs. body rolls. This is how you make a tough character who isn't terribly strong in BESM). -1 Easily Distracted (by, heh, the ladies. Think slightly more self-controlled Happosai of Ranma 1/2) -1 Drunkard (essentially another Easily Distracted, with alcohol) -1 Physically Unappealing (most folks find his manners and appearance unpleasant because he's so old . . . it makes an excellent foil for his skirt-chasing habits). -1 Nemesis: Morgund the Black (an old pupil who turned bad) Skills ------ Wilderness Survival 1 Biological Sciences 2 Physical Sciences 3 Cooking 3 (it's so cheap to be a good cook in BESM, and it's such a staple of anime that somebody in the group is a good cook, that I couldn't resist.) Linguistics 4 (this lets Radlin know about 5-8 languages, to reflect his general knowledgeableness.) Cultural Arts 2 (knowledge of things like poetry and literature) Navigation 1 Social Sciences 1 So essentially, this character's main party utility is his incredible magical power, but with typical wizardly drawbacks of physical weakness and ineptitude. He is very knowledgeable as characters in a Medeival society go, especially with regard to languages and history. For comic relief more than tweaking out more performance, I chose disadvantages that would play off the other characters nicely, given that one of them is a six-inch-tall fairy sworn to stomp out evil, nastiness, and what she would call 'naughtiness,' in the form of Radlin's skirt-chasing habits. -S
