[QUOTE="bwgwl, post: 190877, member: 3876"] i've done something like this to a limited extent. in the world i'm currently working on, i've got a huge pseudo-Egyptian empire where the pharoahs and most of the nobility are half-fiends or tieflings. they worship an evil god as their state religion and have, over the centuries, interbred with his servitors. in another part of the world, there's a floating island that sails through the sky. it was built hundreds of years ago by a cabal of evil monstrous wizards (medusae and hags, primarily) as a terror weapon. the cabal was defeated and the island left floating off the coast of the continent. no one could figure out how to move it or what to do with it until about 20 years ago a consortium of human wizards learned the secret. they built up a moderately large city on the island, and have it doing regular trade runs across the ocean. they've been making a lot of money from merchants who see the floating city as a much safer (and more comfortable) way of getting themselves and their goods across the ocean. most of the other weird empires all lie in the distant past. at one time, there was a large empire controlled by a clan of beholders, that cowed the predominantly human population with their powerful magical abilities and hordes of minotaur mercenaries. they were eventually defeated by an alliance of all their neighbors, including several tribes of wild horse nomads who ended up settling down in the former beholder capital. in another ancient empire, the rightful emperor was dethroned by his court wizard, who was a half-dragon. the new Dragon Emperor immediately began a policy of conquest and subjugation, and filled his court with medusae, lamias, nagas, hags, fiends, and other fell creatures as his advisors. the empire eventally fell to internal corruption and decadence, as well as some kind of magical curse. almost overnight, the cities of the empire fell into ruin and a dark, magical jungle grew over 3/4 of the empire. one of the first empires in the world was a dwarvish empire. these dwarves were intensely curious about magic, and were actually the ones who invented wizardry as a form of learned magic. (before them, the only arcane spellcasters were the occasional sorcerer.) the wizards ended up ruling the empire and used their magic to subjugate the neighboring human lands. they eventually came into contact with the Dragon Emperor and his empire. when they tried to cast a mighty spell to take down the rival empire, it backfired and affected their own lands. lightning and acid rained from the sky and strange, dark beasts roamed the streets killing all they encountered. only a handful of dwarves escaped by retreating underground. even farther back in the past lie the mighty djinni empires, which were eventually defeated by a charismatic minotaur khan and his rampaging (or stampeding :p) hordes of monstrous humanoids.
