[Blood & Guts] Battlefield Unit Combat System FUBAR?

d4

First Post
so i just finished reading through Blood & Guts: Modern Military. it's a great resource for gameable information on the modern US military and special forces (and this is coming from a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division).

however, i had some problems understanding the Battlefield Unit Combat System -- a mass combat system for modern troops.

firstly, units of troops are rated for how many hits they can take in battle. however, the rules don't actually state how to determine how many hits a unit has. from looking at the example units, it looks like it's one hit per level of quality (1 for Raw, 2 for Green, 3 for Inexperienced, etc.). but the rules should really spell that out more clearly.

secondly, the example combat doesn't follow the rules as presented at all!

the rules state that each unit makes an opposed attack roll. the winning unit inflicts one hit per 5 points it wins the roll by. if it wins by less than 5, no hits are inflicted, if it wins by 10 or more, it inflicts two hits, etc. half of all hits (round up) are morale hits and half (round down) are casualty hits.

in the example combat, the winner of the opposed roll always inflicts one hit, regardless of the margin of success. in one round, one side only wins by 2, but still inflicts a hit. in another round, one side wins by 10, but still only inflicts a single hit. the example also states that morale and casualty hits alternate.

i like the system (as presented in the rules). it seems very clean and workable. however, the example needs to be completely rewritten to match the actual rules! (or if the example is the one that's correct, the rules need to be rewritten to match the example!)

on the whole, i'm very pleased with this book, but this level of inconsistency kinda bugs me. :(

Honestly- I dont know what crack I was on when I wrote that. Thanks for bringing it to my attention d4 :)

The example is incorrect, the rules are correct.

I also see the point about the number of hits needing to be spelled out.

Both are fixable and will be addressed.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah... I don't know what kind of crack I was smoking when I missed that, either... I even checked the examples for grammar, and spelling....
:(

no problem, guys -- and thanks for the quick response.

like i said, i'm very pleased with the book overall, but i found that one example rather confusing. ;)

I have sent a revised example to my publisher- the next time the PDF is updated it will be included.

Thanks for pointing it out and sorry for any inconvenience.

The game has already printed, that's pretty much impossible, which is the truly unfortunate thing about the situation.

However, if someone who had the print version needed the new example for errata, that could be arranged.

The rules are correct, it was really only a matter of correcting the math in the example.
