[Blue Devil Games] I'm Doing a John Rain RPG!

Well, it's been more than a year in the works, but I can finally announce it:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLUE DEVIL GAMES TO PUBLISH JOHN RAIN GAME

Leading Publisher Will Bring Barry Eisler’s Best-Selling Assassin to the Game Table.

PLANTATION, FL – March 25, 2008 – Blue Devil Games and Barry Eisler have entered into a licensing agreement to publish table-top role-playing game products based on the author’s award-winning novels featuring assassin John Rain.

“Role-playing games are about creating stories,” says game designer Justin D. Jacobson. “More than just gripping stories, intriguing characters, and realistic depictions of the art of combat, the John Rain novels get right in your face and demand: When you pull the trigger, how will it change you? These qualities make John Rain the ultimate source material for an exciting and thought-provoking game.”

“I've long thought that a ‘natural causes’ assassin like John Rain would be a great foundation for a terrific RPG, and I'm excited to be working with Justin and BDG to make it happen,” says Eisler. Eisler’s Requiem for an Assassin launched at #19 on the New York Times Best Seller List in 2007. Like its predecessors, Requiem depicts the life-and-death escapades of John Rain, the assassin who specializes in death by “natural causes”. Eisler’s seventh novel is slated for release in early 2009.

In Tokyo Rain, players to take the role of an assassin or his prey, building their own cat-and-mouse story, culminating in a showdown with their characters’ very lives at stake. But, in the words of John Rain: Killing is the easy part. Tokyo Rain will feature a foreword by Eisler and will be available at major American booksellers and on-line by the end of 2008. Tokyo Rain will be a stand-alone game with an original system, tailored to suit the material. More information will be released shortly with details of the game and related products. Information is also available at www.johnraingame.com.

I've never heard of the author or novels, but a quick search tells me it's a good deal for you, especially the wide distribution. Congrats!

That's one of the interesting things about this project. In my experience, the number of gamers who have heard of John Rain is surprisingly small. You'd think a bestselling series about a freelance assassin would find more purchase in the rpg community. In fact, that's one of the ways I was able to sell Barry on the idea, trying to broaden his exposure to a demographic that, generally speaking, likes to read thriller novels.

Will the system be d20 compatible or completely separate?
Something completely different. Trying to emulate the stories from the novels demands building from the ground up. For starters, this will be a head-to-head, competitive game (in the vein of Agon, if you're familiar with that game. I'm also committed to using more common implements to cater to Barry's non-gamer fans, i.e., six-siders, poker chips, etc. I'll be talking more about the system in my DevLog in the coming months.
