[Bo9S] Hit-someone-else maneuvers

WotC's bitch
For example, Manticore Parry (Iron Heart) lets you deflect an enemy's attack into another target adjacent to you. Does it still work if there's noone else adjacent to you?

I suppose your enemy could always attack the darkness. :p

To be honest I'm a bit dubious about these maneuvers myself. Setting Sun is especially chock-full of them.

Not one of the parts of IH I liked that much.

As for the original question, that's a tough call. Does it let you redirect the attack back at whoever's attacking you? They're most likely adjacent to whoever's using this counter...

I would rule that you can't use it unless there is someone to redirect the attack to. One of the balancing factors of those feats is that they're situational. If you remove the situational limitation, they become too powerful.

The Fool's Strike counter (Setting Sun) is 8th level and is meant to turn the attacker's strike back on him. So I'd say other maneuvers shouldn't allow it.

I'd probably run it as saying you cause the attacker to strike the ground, or whatever, if no other target is available.

He could attack an object adjacent to you, like the ground.

(Be careful though, some DMs make NPCs tough enough to one-shot the planet you're standing on. And then Cleave you afterwards.)
