The Book of Names

Ever need a name for a character? Ever need naming conventions for a region?

In world building and more structured play, consistency with names and naming conventions can make all the difference. with 100,000 names broken down ethnically and historically, this book is a must have.

And just fun to read.

This is a book with tremendous scope. The author, Malcolm Bowers, has worked with Gary Gygax to bring you an indispensable resource tool, whether you play the game or run the game. 100,000 names. The book include’s people names from all over the world, epithets, places such as inns and taverns, spoof names and more. It includes how to create names, pronunciation guides, translations and how to name the coat of arms of a knight or land. It includes names for fantastic races, topographical features and titles for nobility. Though, as Mr. Bowers says, not utterly exhaustive, it is more than comprehensive in its breadth of material and its depth treatment.

If you game and have ever had problems naming your character, then the Book of Names is for you. If you run games and have forever peopled your Inns and Taverns with same fat inn keeper named Bors, then the Book of Names is for you. If you design or create any kind of RPG games, modules, adventures or settings then this is the tool you will want on hand.
The Extraordinary Book Names is a perfect addition to the Gygaxian Fantasy World series, bringing you yet another gaming tool you won’t want to be without.

We have loaded the first two of four pdfs to allow you to sample the book. More will be added in the new year. You can see then here .

Just to add a little to Davis' post. The Extraordinary Book of Names is a book meant to be USED. Used and Used again. With that in mind we made certain of the binding on this one (as of course we do all our hardbacks) and paid the extra bit to have it smyth and sewn. It will take the beating folks, so when you look at the price tag, please keep that in mind.

In a completely uncharacteristic move for me, after reading the press release I went to the Troll Lord Games' website and, after quickly checking out the teasers already on the site, I went ahead and activated my heretofore never used PayPal account in order to buy this book. (That The Canting Crew would come free with my order was just an extra incentive. I would have paid for the Book of Names alone, though it was nice to have the gift.)

I got the book yesterday in the mail, went through it last night with my wife (who is not a gamer, but is a writer as well), and by 11:00 pm we had both concluded that this was the best "gaming" book ever published. I say "gaming" because it really isn't a gaming book (except for the Onomancer PrC in the back for d20 rules--as well as for Lejendary Adventures rules--which is quite good for an NPC), but more akin to a Reference book. Seriously, put this on a hardbacked dictionary-sized edition, and it could rest right next to the Oxford English Dictionary quite proudly.

My hat goes off to Mr. Malcom Bowers for such a superb work. I have other books of names, as well as various cultural names lists, but to have them all in one place, conveniently organized by country/culture, and with attention paid to Medieval conventions to boot, is simply a dream come true. The essays are informative and well-researched, and the entries on pronunciation and naming conventions for each country/culture are heaven-sent.

I can't think of one single reason why any gamer or writer should not own this book. I am very glad I bought it, and thank Troll Lord Games for putting out such a product.

Edit: Reading through the Canting Crew and liking it a lot. I think I'm gonna go and take a second look at the other two books in this series...

Lovely

This book looks terrific, and is exactly what I've been looking for for some time. However, I have one question: is the entire book available on PDF? I have a home made name generator (it's part of my personal world builder that contains lists culled from the internet) that I would love to replace. If I got the names from a hard copy book, that would mean a whole LOT of transcribing. I'm a much bigger fan of cut 'n' paste. ;)

Halwhite! Glad you liked the book. It really is an extraordinary book, without a doubt. We have three of them at the game table and use them constantly...of course Chris H. is running the games these days and I keep getting my Romanesque fighters killed...scorpian killed the first one, some lizard man the second one and I'm on my third, a cleric this time but I cursed my deity and threw away my holy symbol and took up the sword lol...but at any rate, thanks for the kind words.

Mafisto. We don't at yet have any plans to put it in pdf though that may be in the offering later. I'll have to bring that up with Mr. Gygax and Bowers.

This book sold like hot cakes at Origins. We were very happy.
