In a completely uncharacteristic move for me, after reading the press release I went to the Troll Lord Games' website and, after quickly checking out the teasers already on the site, I went ahead and activated my heretofore never used PayPal account in order to buy this book. (That The Canting Crew would come free with my order was just an extra incentive. I would have paid for the Book of Names alone, though it was nice to have the gift.) I got the book yesterday in the mail, went through it last night with my wife (who is not a gamer, but is a writer as well), and by 11:00 pm we had both concluded that this was the best "gaming" book ever published. I say "gaming" because it really isn't a gaming book (except for the Onomancer PrC in the back for d20 rules--as well as for Lejendary Adventures rules--which is quite good for an NPC), but more akin to a Reference book. Seriously, put this on a hardbacked dictionary-sized edition, and it could rest right next to the Oxford English Dictionary quite proudly. My hat goes off to Mr. Malcom Bowers for such a superb work. I have other books of names, as well as various cultural names lists, but to have them all in one place, conveniently organized by country/culture, and with attention paid to Medieval conventions to boot, is simply a dream come true. The essays are informative and well-researched, and the entries on pronunciation and naming conventions for each country/culture are heaven-sent. I can't think of one single reason why any gamer or writer should not own this book. I am very glad I bought it, and thank Troll Lord Games for putting out such a product. Edit: Reading through the Canting Crew and liking it a lot. I think I'm gonna go and take a second look at the other two books in this series...
