Bookmarks on small PDFs?

BLACKDIRGE

Adventurer
Hi all,

I just wanted to pose a question to the more experienced publishers out there. In a number of staff reviews for Blackdirge Publishing PDFs, the only negative mentioned was the lack of bookmarks. Now, the majority of my PDFs are from 5 to 10 pages in length, so I felt it was unnecessary to add bookmarks to such a small product.

Am I wrong in this assumption? Does John Q. Consumer really want bookmarks in small products?

Oh, and I'm not trying to call out any reviewers, especially since the reviews I'm referencing were very positive (4 and 5 stars), and it certainly isn't difficult to add bookmarks. I’m just trying to get an idea of what consumers might want.

Thanks,

BD

I usually do full bookmarks, but then again, it's a simple select - new bookmark while writing the doc (can I say I absolutely love Adobe InDesign?), so I barely even notice it :)

When I was working out of Word / Publisher, yeah, I can see why that might be iffy, but I've always done it just because I would want it for my own personal use, so I figure might as well do it for the customers, too. It makes flipping back and forth in an e-book a lot easier.

In my mind bookmarks are one of the features PDF have over books so I always mention book marks in my PDF reviews. From experience using PDFs on the computer at the table book marks are a god send even in the small PDFs. I like them as they are an easy to use index for me to view as I cannot alway remember which PDF has what information in it.

I have been enjoying your PDFs. Good work!! :D

That makes sense. I was always under the impression that bookmarks were only useful in large PDFs like the Tome of Horrors, but you've shown me the light. You'll find bookmarks in all Blackdirge releases from now on.

Thanks! And thanks for taking the time to review them.

I agree with Crothian. In smaller pdfs it's not such a problem not to have them, but it's still very useful when you've got a lot of pdfs open and you're jumping from one to another, or if you're simply trying to find something but can't remember which pdf it's in.

I've only reviewed one of your products before (Hoplite), but I did mention the bookmarks. I think it was more a case of being complete and comprehensive in the review. It doesn't bother me personally that much although I do find them very useful. I think I've got another one of your products up for review later this week (Armored Apparition).

If the PDF is only 5 to 10 pages it shouldn't take you that long to add the bookmarks, it's only an added value to your product.

Yes, you should bookmark PDFs.

I will give you an example.

Lets say I release a book of 20 magic items that fits on 5 pages. Well, someone looking at it may read it and remember a few good magic items they want to use later. When they come a day later, they can open the bookmark and find the correct magic item, even though right there on page 1.

Not to mention it works well as a "Table of contents" for the reader.

As a publisher it is good because that is another tagline you can use in your marketing. "This pdf is fully bookmarked!"

Sound advice, especially that part about something to add to a tagline.

Thanks
