Borrowed Spellbook

If a character aquires a spellbook from another wizard, is there any rules for making this book one of your own? Or is it forever considered a "Borrowed" spellbook, requiring the spellcraft check to memorize spells from it. Is there downtimes required for it, time or components?

In the Forgotten Realms Supplements (I think Magic of Faerûn), there is a rule about how to decipher a spellbook and use it as if it were your own. I figure, that the decipher part would be a lot easier, if the creator helps you with it.

You can't prepare spells from a borrowed spellbook unless those spells have already been scribed into your own spellbook at some time in the past.
(PHB, page 155, wizard spells and borrowed spellbooks, first sentence)

The Magic of Faerun supplement has an optional rule for "Mastering" another wizards spellbook.

It takes 10 days + 1 day per spell in the spellbook (including cantrips).

Spellcraft DC = 25 + level of the highest spell in the book.

BTW, the Core rule method would be to scribe the spells into your own book by expending the 200 gold per spell level and so on.

I think, if your DM has the Common Sense feat, he'll exclude spells you already have from the time needed to master the spellbook.

By the way: who of you uses the rules of spellbook costs and size and whatnot, and who of you just ignores it and just let's the wizard pay for spell scrolls?

Normally that's what poor Helspar would do if his original spellbook hadn't been stolen. Going on a quest to regain it with no spells of one's own seems foolish. Fortunately he had one he aquired from an NPC (actually Charwynn's from the Sunless Citadel) and has set to work using it. It doesn't help that most of his money was stolen as well, so he's sort of SOL.

Ouch.

Well, best of luck to you in finding your spellbook (or enough money to scribe a new one).

But, if you are looking for a rule to make the borrowed spellbook your own, the one from Magic of Faerûn is what you were looking for.

I do. I also make available the spellbook construction and enhancement supplements from Magic of Faerun. The more creative you can get with your spellbook, the better. :)
