Tonight will be a hot night in the desert as former world champions Montell Griffin and Julio Gonzalez meet in an IBF eliminator. Both fighters will be looking to earn another world title shot, this fight will be televised as part of Fox's "The Best Damn Sports Show Period." Goossen-Tutor Promotions will present this special Cinco de Mayo card on Thursday from the Spa Resort and Casino in Palm Springs, California.
Former world champion Julio Gonzalez of Huntington Beach, California is regarded as one of the toughest and most exciting Light heavyweights in Boxing. Back in 2003, Julio shocked the world when he went to Germany and defeated Dariusz Michalczewski for the WBO title. Michalczewski was undefeated with nearly 50 wins, and had been calling out Roy Jones at the time. Gonzalez lost the title in his next bout, also in Germany, against Zsoldt Erdei. He has bounced back, beating the very tough David Telesco by KO in his last fight. Julio's only other loss came against Roy Jones Jr., and he has a 37-2 23 KOs record.
Montell Griffin is hoping to get one last crack at a world title. In his last eliminator a couple of years ago, Griffin lost to Antonio Tarver. Griffin gained fame when he became the first man to beat Roy Jones Jr., albeit by disqualification. Griffin has also gained a reputation as one of the toughest and craftiest light heavyweights. He has a solid resumé with wins over Derrick Harmon, George Jones, Jose Luis Rivera, and none other than James Toney. He is coming off a win over the tough Sam Reese in his last fight. Griffin is 47-5 with 30 KOs. This fight will headline this Goossen-Tutor card.
There will be six additional fights on this card. In a junior welterweight bout, tough veteran Steve Quinonez will battle promising young James Armah. Quinonez is a tough veteran, who is 30-9, and has lost his last three fights all by split decision. He has been in the ring with the likes of Jose Luis Castillo, Micky Ward, and has beaten name fighters like Lovemore N'dou, and Juan "Pollo" Valenzuela. He will provide the young Armah with his toughest test to date. Armah is trained by Joe Goossen, he is currently 14-0 and will be making a big step up.
There will be two heavyweight showcases on the card. In a six rounder, exciting heavyweight Jason Gavern of Scranton, Pennsylvania will battle Jermaine Woods of Phoenix. Gavern is a firefighter in Scranton, and has gained a reputation as a tough, hard-nosed fighter with good skills. He is currently 7-1-1, with his sole loss being a tight decision to Malcolm Tann. Woods is 8-2-1 with 5 KOs, with one of his losses coming against Cedric Boswell. One of the most talked about heavyweights in Southern California will also be on the card. Chris Arreola of Riverside will be fighting an opponent yet to be determined. Arreola is 10-0 with 9 KOs, and most of his fights have not lasted long.
