I went to a smallish, local gaming convention this weekend, and in the dealer room a local gaming store (not local to me) had a bunch of clearance stuff they were trying to get rid of. 20% off old board games, 40% off old Games Workshop models, that kind of thing. Then I asked about the "boxes of stuff" on the floor. "That's old D&D stuff. $20 a box." Now, I'm not an "old stuff" collector, but flipping through I saw some classic modules in there, stuff I used to own, and the nostalgia welled up. I'm supposed to run D&D fairly soon, and old stuff is just as good (if not better) than new stuff when it comes to cannibalizing. My con budget allowed me to snag one box only, so I chose one that seemed like modules rather than boxed sets (telling myself "you won't use continent maps from another setting, and there's a lot of air in a boxed set - go for pure weight!"). Here's what I got, and everything's in pretty good shape: All four Slavers modules (A1-4) D1-2 and D3 G123 Against the Giants C1 Hidden Shrine of Tamoanchan C2 Ghost Tower of Inverness C3 Lost Island of Castanamir C4 To Find a King I would've dropped twenty on just those. But there was more... *Every* original Dragonlance module, plus "Mists" and "World of Krynn" B7 Rahasia B8 Journey to the Rock B9 Castle Caldwell and Beyond DA1 Adventures in Blackmoor X1 Isle of Dread X5 Temple of Death X6 Quagmire X7 War Rafts of Kron X8 Drums on Fire Mountain X9 Savage Coast X10 Red Arrow, Black Shield X12 Skarda's Mirror CM1 Test of the Warlords CM2 Death's Ride CM3 Sabre River CM4 Earthshaker CM6 Where Chaos Reigns CM8 Endless Stair H2 Mines of Bloodstone I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City I2 Tomb of the Lizard King REF5 Lords of Darkness WGR1 Greyhawk Ruins GAZ2 Emirates of Ylaruam GAZ10 Orcs of Thar (missing Orcwars bits) GAZ13 Shadow Elves SJR1 Lost Ships SJR2 Realmspace Dragon #176 Dungeon #58 Dungeon #78 Return to the Keep on the Borderlands Temple, Tower & Tomb Red Steel: Savage Baronies (with CD in shrink) Frankly, I think I made out like a bandit. Okay, so that's the bragging bit. Now for the aftermath: I can't help but think that whoever's running this FLGS doesn't know enough about D&D (maybe it's mostly a [something else] store) to realize that a large chunk of that list above has actual resale value. I mean, it's called eBay, people, look into it. The 'complete Dragonlance run' alone would've been worth putting up as a lot, don't you think? The only sad part of the story is that by the time I convinced my wife (who was there with me, LARPing) that it was "totally worth" buying more boxes, the others had already been sold to some other guy. Still, I'm pretty darned happy with myself right now.
