The table also includes the build taglines (setting the mood) and descriptors (basically what the build does), along with a bit of extra metadata: maturation level, i.e. at which point the build's tricks are solid, and before which there might be some problems. If multiple levels are listed, it means the trick evolves. For example, the Pinball Brothers start off as a bullrush build (which is completely online by 3, though it improves over time), transition to an ubercharger (around level 8 is when this is fully online), and finally into a massive area control machine (by level 14).

The second post in this thread includes all the showcases we have in progress but haven't finished. Our group pretty consistently tries to keep "tier three" philosophy in mind (i.e. except in special circumstances, no single character can single-handedly end an encounter or provide answers to everything, but they can perform well in their niche and have enough options to provide something useful when outside of their niche) when we build, and I would say most of them come out with that in mind. A few, like the psycarnum warrior, probably bump higher than that, and a few (I think Always on Edge or the Phantom Rush fit here, although Always on Edge is the better of the two) are lower than that, but I really don't think there's that much variance.

Of course, the "Overpowered Wizards" builds look like they're in T1, but just about anything with a wizard base and making use of wizard-exclusive options will fall somewhere in there simply by virtue of their components, even before you look at the gameplay, so...

Originally posted by SwordDisciple:

So when is the next one?

Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind:

Besides my usual insane workload (two papers accepted, one more almost ready to submit, half my PhD candidacy exam reading list done, talk rehersals for this summer's conference season, and so on), I've been in and out of the hospital for the past few weeks (not related to the cancer I mentioned in my sig - there's other health concerns I'd rather not get into, which normally aren't life-threatening, but sometimes in tandem they aren't very hot). I think you'll forgive the delays on my part.

RT's gotten busier as well, but still managed to find the time to get cracking on one or two of the above entries (the most popular so far, and also the biggest). Don't worry about it too much for now; a few more specific treatments and a minor endoscopic surgery and I'll have almost everything worth worrying about under total control. There'll be a few lifelong changes, but nothing I can't handle (inexpensive medicine and no chance of ever having hair again, for instance).

Props for the Pratchett (and if I may throw one back apropos of the other discussion, check out the motto on his official coat of arms. It is as pun-ridden and yet appropriate as Pratchett's own fictional heraldry, but the sentiment is one I share. (...Of course, to keep the meaning rather than the words, it really should have said "noli timere mortem," but that would be slightly less Pratchettian) ), but no, that's exactly the wrong kind of psychology (though it's certainly interesting for other reasons!).

My work is really more of a branch of this; that's easily the best intro text to the field I've ever seen, and it's available free under Creative Commons. (Full disclosure: Author is my PhD supervisor.)

Andarious: I don't think I mentioned this, but the robots I use are much simpler than that. I don't build robots to do a task; I build robots, and then watch them do what's in their nature. I teach students about that aspect of cognitive science using LEGO. The textbook is also online if you're interested (I did co-author that one; all the other embodied cog-sci books we could find were pure philosophy or case studies, so we wrote one that also had robotics exercises.). There's also promo videos which include me back when I had hair, although said hair was in transition at the time and looked kind of ridiculous.

Back on topic, I DO happen to have a writeup ready for a build not mentioned there (Holy Fire - it's a fire-based sorcerer variation of the Mailman, designed to make "fire sorcerer" not suck as much, to showcase what you can do with energy damage if you're trying, and try to show alternatives to Incantrix when building Mailmen. This is clearly intended as a tutorial rather than as a gamebreaking new build though), and I'll try to post it up later today. Maybe that'll get me motivated to distill the good stuff out of the queue.

That said, a few of the builds could probably be pruned down to just their core tricks - the Groundhog Mage and some of the Wolf Pack builds are probably best suited with a smaller article on lesser-known or unknown synergies rather than a definitive "THIS IS THINE BUILD" style article. I might try a new format and see if I can't clear out the queue.

Originally posted by aelryinth:

University of Alberta? You're a bloody Canadian?
Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: We've put together a lot of builds now, but rather than having them all just indexed in my sig, I'll put them here. (For one thing, signatures don't display on the mobile site.) As always, these are not all my builds, but they come from my group: Tempest Stormwind [TS], Radical Taoist [RT], Andarious [AR], DisposableHero_ [DH], Sionnis [SN], and Seishi [SH]. Authorship is identified in the table. If any of them look interesting, announce it here. (EDIT: ...Damn, I can't get the table to display width properly on Firefox (Chrome handles the scaling), and the HTML is giving me headaches. Tucked away in a spoiler block until I fix it.) The Flash Step: (x)Illustrating the tactical use of the Evasive Reflexes feat to add another dimension to the AoO metagame (which, to the best of my knowledge, wasn't really explored before this article). Includes three example builds: the Rook Knight, Outmaneuver, and the Flashmaster. Kung-Fu Witchcraft:(x) Extending the Tome of Battle to the realm of CR tomfoolery. DMs, take note. Players, you can skip this one (not because it's uninteresting, but because it won't work unless you're choosing monsters based on CR instead of ECL). Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: All right, so we've got a number of builds put together for showcasing, and several others in progress. Up until now, we've been doing them haphazardly from a larger list of potential candidates, and then rushing last-minute to finish up the one that wins weekly voting. Now, I'm changing it up a bit - all of our in-progress builds are going to be listed here, and if you want a specific one, say so in this thread or in the most recent one. Of course, I'm not a fan of giving away too much information, and a few of these are still being refined, so I'll just stick to the names for now. -The Wolf Pack -Jack B. Quicker -Maybe Later -Mook Mulcher -Abominable Throwman -Overpowered Wizards pt.1: The Guild Mages -Overpowered Wizards pt.2: The Circle Mages (EDIT: The Groundhog Mage blends aspects of both the "Guild" and "Circle" mages, and has been showcased.) -Singularity There are also plenty of others still under development, and a few refinements to existing builds. Thanks for reading - and as always, we value your input. Originally posted by EruditeApe: Nice to see this up. I'm voting for this Guild Mages one, since your casters rarely disappoint and Circle Magic has been done to death. I'm hoping, however, that it isn't just vanilla MotAO shennanigans. Out of idle curiousity, is Singularity nanobots abuse? Did you mean for [TS] to come before your name, as opposed to after like everyone else's? Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: Thanks. The circle mages are related to the guild mages (and won't be shown until after the guild mages go up), but with more of the stops pulled out. The guild mages make use of MotAO, but that's not the central point of their trick (though it's certainly a nice one). No. (Generally speaking I don't design with nanobots in mind.) The name comes from a different aspect of the build. (EDIT: I will share that it makes use of Leadership, but the followers aren't part of the equation. Using them as fodder for something - even primitive Aid Anothers - is something I haven't considered.) Typo. I had a lot to keep track of translating this from raw HTML to board code. Fixed. Originally posted by Vincent_Dranoch: I vote for Overpowered Mages or Singularity. And i wanna know if is possible to merge T3, Psycarnum Warrior and God Hand, since they are very class similar, something like an Azurin Ardent or Psychic Warrior 18/Monk 2 + Tashalatora and Psycarnum Infusion, or wouldn't it be possible because of the feats you need to keep those different builds working? And i loved all these builds, especially the ones with casting or manifesting abilities, or the gish ones, and my 3 favorites are Ashardalon Reborn, Dread Lord of the Dead, and Wizsassin. Originally posted by draco1119: How can a Hangover fan not vote for Wolf Pack? Originally posted by KrootRebellion: As a science nerd, I will vote for Singularity ! :P Originally posted by Seeron: Is it possible, that you also include a column with the Tier, you would rate the build in? Cause i love using your builds as a basic idea for BBEGs. Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: I can try, but they're a bit variable (particularly the wizard-based ones). Originally posted by SwordDisciple: So when is the next one? Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: Besides my usual insane workload (two papers accepted, one more almost ready to submit, half my PhD candidacy exam reading list done, talk rehersals for this summer's conference season, and so on), I've been in and out of the hospital for the past few weeks (not related to the cancer I mentioned in my sig - there's other health concerns I'd rather not get into, which normally aren't life-threatening, but sometimes in tandem they aren't very hot). I think you'll forgive the delays on my part. RT's gotten busier as well, but still managed to find the time to get cracking on one or two of the above entries (the most popular so far, and also the biggest). Since they're related I might post them sequentially, without the huge break in between them. I might start a writeup for Singularity if I find time to procrastinate (which is honestly how this writeup series started in the first place). Originally posted by RogerWilco: I hope you get well. I see the Cancer prognosis has updated in a positive way, which I am happy to see. Originally posted by KeeperofManyNames: Hey, sorry to hijack this, but I have a message for you, Tempest, and I'm not sure whether or not you're getting PMs or whether PMs are working at all. I'm acting as courier for Draco, who's apparently been permabanned along with a whole bunch of other people. He wanted me to let you know that he's moved to nogoblinsallowed.com, which is being run by miss bun and is sort of turning into a forum for everyone who's either been driven away by the forum update or, in his case, kicked off. I don't think there was anything else major he wanted passed along, just that that's where he'd be now that he can't be here. Sorry again to hijack this, but I wanted to make sure you saw it, since Draco really wanted to get a message to you. Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: I get that a lot, but no, not really. (Full disclosure: Author is my PhD supervisor.) Andarious: I don't think I mentioned this, but the robots I use are much simpler than that. Originally posted by aelryinth: University of Alberta? You're a bloody Canadian? No wonder you're so mild-mannered. Dealing with us Americans must be amusing as all heck. I'm not sure that link to the heraldry was accurate...was that Prachett's real name on the death announcement? And you'll have to explain the puns and stuff, I don't know Latin. ==Aelryinth Originally posted by 123456789blaaa: So in a choice between being completely wrong and not making a Pratchett reference, you expect me to to choose the former? I think we have very different priorities . Coool . I'l have to check some of that out. Sounds interesting. Like the Flash-Stepper showcase? Originally posted by Tempest_Stormwind: Ael: Further down the page. The black and white shield with the ankh on it, to Sir Terrence David John Pratchett. (He doesn't use a pseudonym.) The motto is "noli timere messorem", which literally means "Don't fear the reaper". Not only is it a reference to Death in his stories (observe that the Sto Helit family descended from Mort has the exact same motto), but it's also apropos given how Pratchett's become a vocal supporter of voluntary euthanasia following his Alzheimer's diagnosis (something to the effect of "I will not die of Alzheimers. I'm taking the disease with me."). (My minor quibble was that, since the phrase is idiomatic in English, it loses meaning in Latin, and the loose equivalent should be "noli timere mortem", or "do not fear death" - but since a disgustingly large amount of heraldry in general is based on puns and wordplay (something that Pratchett himself lampooned in Feet of Clay) I think that wouldn't be as appropriate a motto.) Count: A bit less diversified, with fewer builds and less discussion, but that's the right idea. More like Kung Fu Witchcraft in that regards.
