Actually, I came away with the distinct impression it was something else, like a Hyena or African Wild dog.

My best guess is that it was a wild boar!

I think it was a lion. In the movie the word "lion" is used three times. The villain thinks his totem is an eagle and a lion. The villain also claims that a lion bit off his arm. Finally, in church they read a passage from the bible which mentions a lion. Of course this proves nothing, but it is common in European storytelling and theatre to mention key pieces of information three times. I don't think that this is merely a coincidence. -Believe it or not.
