Buffs and Death

What happens to buffs and ongoing effects when you die?

Specifically, I have barbarian in my group that was both raging (Swift Panther Rage) and had Longtooth Shifting going. Then he hit -8 HP. He just rolled a natural 20 to come back from the dead. Are all his buffs and ongoing effects gone or do they start right back up again?

I checked the PHB under Death and Dying but it doesn't say.

As an additional question, when he rolled the natural 20 he automatically used a healing surge to get back to 0 HP. Then does he take his turn as normal? Or was rolling the 20 and getting back to 0 HP his turn?

Thanks!

-8 hp isn't dead, it's unconcious and dying. As far as I know, merely being unconcious and bleeding out doesn't affect any conditions or buffs that might be on you.

And you make your saves at the end of your turn, so when he rolled that 20 and woke up, his turn was over at that point.

More accurately, he'd spend a healing surge, go up to 0, and then gain the hps from the healing surge spent. If he just stayed at 0, he'd still be dying.

Yeah, -8 isn't dead, just unconscious, nothing happens to the buffs unless they say something happens to them specifically when the character goes unconscious. This is still a valid question though for things that bring people back from the dead, such as Arcane Spirit from the Archmage Epic Destiny, although what happens to buffs isn't the first question I'd have about it as there are a lot of questions unanswered by the description.
