I mean, Kennedy was in charge, but I don't think Acolyte was a knee-jerk cancellation, it was a poor ratings cancellation. Acolyte was weird because it had a strong cast, some really interesting and good ideas, by far the best lightsaber/Jedi fight-scenes outside of the movies (and indeed better than almost all of the movies), and strong visual design, but the storytelling approach was frankly completely incoherent, confusing, staggeringly badly paced, and unreasonable to expect a general audience to engage with, and predictably, they didn't! There was a lot of racist and sexist and naughty word going around just as with TLJ, but unlike TLJ, the story with The Acolyte was such a mess until like literally the last episode or two that it was hard to defend. Should they have cancelled it? Probably not, especially not with that cast and that amount of great setup. But the showrunner, who also did Russian Doll, Leslye Headland, really didn't seem to account for the different audience and expectations like, at all, and just didn't put the package together well enough to convince that audience. So if I was Disney, I'd have had stern words with her, and if she didn't want to change things up for S2, I'd have replaced her with someone who was going to go with a tighter and more conventional storytelling approach. It got a much more positive reception from critics because they're more used to unconventional and frankly to kind of flaccid storytelling, and more willing to make allowance for it because they know it can pay off. Most audiences do not. Especially not the "Ooooh lightsabers and Jedi are cool!" crowd. It's a real pity because I think the same exact story told much more straightforwardly could have been very successful. Also I think at this point we must simply forbid flashbacks in Star Wars shows. It's done. You can't have any more for five years. Nope, sorry, no expections. No flashbacks. Not for anyone, not for any reason. As storytelling technique they have been abused to the point of breaking by basically every SW show. You're going to need to re-earn to use them!
