Building a Better Rogue

EbbTide

First Post
I am involved in a game in which it is more roll playing(aka hack n' slash) and therefore need to build a powerful thief. I was wondering what feats/skills and prestige class would you take? I presently a third level tiefling rogue and am trying to build a second story thief that is good in a dungeon. Can you guys give me some advice.

For a combat oriented game, take feats and skills that will enhance your ability to get sneak attacks in. Hide and Move Silent are your best skill choices, along with Tumble for getting out of tight spots. A little search, spot, listen, open locks, disable device, and climb will go a long way so don't spend too many points on them. Improved Initiative will allow you to catch more foes flat-footed, and maybe some Weapon Finesse if you don't have a high strength score.

Max out your Hide, Move Silently, and Bluff skills to give yourself the opportunity to get more sneak attacks in. Always try to flank an enemy. Also, any item of Invisibility will be helpful.

For feats, take the two-weapon fighting feat tree. When you can get full attack sneak attacks, you can end up doing some massive damage, even if you don't have a Strength bonus. If you're lacking in Strength but have Dexterity, the rapier is probably the best weapon to use the Weapon Finesse feat on to improve your chances in hitting.

Lets see....two weapon fighting/ambidextry with a rapier for your primary weapon....short sword as your secondary (same damage...not as good crit, but its a light weapon), hide, bluff, move silently, and tumble are good choices. take 1 level of ranger for the TWF/Ambidextry part. I believe hide, bluff, move silently, and maybe tumble are class skills there also. Improved Initiative and Weapon Finesse(rapier) are imperative. Weapon Finesse(short sword) would also help, if youve got both weapons.(im playing a mid-level rogue, so i know what works in combat). dont worry about archery feats, as you can barely sneak attack with them.

Altho finesse on short sword instead lets you finesse both hands with one feat, since you usually can't use 2 rapiers.

Good idea. I'm still stuck in Neverwinter Nights mode where Weapon Finesse works with all finessable weapons. I used to be such a 3e idiot savant before that game came out too. :)

Get a Wand of Blindsight (Magic of Faerun) and pump up the Use Magic Device skill. Then, do the darkness thing, wander in there, and start sneak attacking to your heart's content. 8)

Thanks to all of you who have replyed so quickly. I see that most of you are in agreement when it comes to crunching a Rogue.

I will look into following the above mentioned advice but please keep it coming.

dual classing into an assassin would be key. Also pick a race with a dex bonus to max out your stats.

The assassain just study them for 2 rounds, run up and hit them once and they die (save vs. something dunno off the top o'my head). This works really damn well when fighting big crittes with lots o hitpoints. Stay back, observe, sneak attack and then kill them..
