Uh, maybe. You do kind of have to know what you're looking for, and if how the spell functions is known, a simple lead lined safe or cubby hole can block it. It's not really a very good spell save for specific uses.

Depending on the edition, yes. The main thing that changes, as I recall, is it's range.

"Find Specific Non-Magical Object in Fairly Short Range" is how it's been defined in most editions. 5e is better because it has a 1000 foot range, lasts for up to 10 minutes, and can find magic items.

Though unless you know exactly what you are looking for, it's going to locate the nearest object of the type you are looking for, which can be less useful.

If you know that the target is likely to be using countermeasures, using it to locate "the nearest lead-lined safe" can be a useful secondary option.
