Last year I took a punt on subscribing to the 'Adventure Games Journal', a small press magazine about the Wilderlands, using C&C as the core system. My pack was about three months late, but hopefully I get a regular run from here on. I wasn't sure what the overall standard of the stuff would be like, but I did enjoy the Wilderlands box set. I'm not familiar with any of the old Judge's Guild stuff. And I use C&C as my level-gaining, dungeon-bashing system of choice. Anyway, so I've ripped open my subscriber's envelope. I've got the magazine itself: 48 pages, B&W, cardboard cover, some illustrations. All the maps are clean and easy to understand. The layout is very simple and clear to understand. The author seems to have a fondness for Century Gothic font, as it's everywhere. The magazine includes a long article about the Wilderlands world and planar cosmology (probably a bit too long, but I guess it's introducing the world), an article about the City State of the Invincible Overlord, a mini-adventure sent in a maze with lots of teleport gates that would have me pulling out my teeth if I were to run it. There's a new monster, the write-up of a god and a list of Wilderlands rumours. My subscriber pack also came a nifty map of Wilderands area #18! It's in colour, so looks heaps better than the one in the Wilderlands boxed set. If you flip this map over there's a B&W players version. The paper it's on isn't very tough, so I'll have to get this off to the print shop for lamination later on. I also got a reproduction of anoriginal Judges Guild newsletter and a nice letter from the editor/author of AGP. The letter said that I'd get a campaign guide to go with my colour map in the pack, but I didn't have one in mine. I checked out some forums. Apparently that's coming out next month. Anyway, AGP #1 is recommended, if you're not concerned with flashy, colour artwork, it's nice 'Dragon' magazine replacement, with bite-sized articles about this and that. I'd recommend it to C&Cers and d20 people who want to pick it for the new Wilderlands content. I found it far more to my tastes that the issues 1-7 of Crusader magazine so far (although that should pick up now that Jim Ward is involved.) (FYI: http://www.adventuregamespubs.com/) I'll do a more detailed, review for the site when I finish reading it.
