Call of Cthulhu: Did sales get seriously hurt when RPGA dropped it?

Any of you still play it anymore at conventions?

RPGA had Call of Cthulu? I never knew that. I know when I used to go to Kublacon, there was a lot of CoC games there (not under the RPGA though). I played in a few myself and had a blast of having characters go from normal competent people to sociopathic insane cultist dedicated to destroying humanity.

I know RPGA had the Living Death campaign, run by Jae Walker. It was Ravenloft-based and used the Masque of the Red Death rules. They also had CoC one-shots in the Classic games. I don't believe they ever had a Living CoC game, though.

I used to run a couple RPGA Call of Cthulhu games every convention. When the RPGA dropped them, I was really disappointed and then CoC pretty much evaporated around here (Denver, CO).

The people I go to cons with really noticed the loss of RPGA Classic Call of Cthulhu games, along with the rest of the RPGA Classics.

A con that I help run (AnonyCon, in Stamford, CT) started producing its own pregen games to fill the void, and we've always included Call of Cthulhu in the lineup because (A) we have some authors who like writing for it and (B) there is significant player demand.

My impression is that Call of Cthulhu is much less prominent at other cons than it was, although there are still some games running. That's just impressionistic, though.

I have no idea on the sales question-- I'd be quite curious.

To understand RPGA numbers - a game like CoC in the RPGA probably had a few hundred loyal fans. So, for a game like CoC...eh. Not a big deal. Living Death, BTW, was run by Claire Hoffman - though Jae Walker was a big player of Living Death.

For a game like Living Death, a few hundred players was actually a lot. Smaller indie games can get by with sales of 500 or so. But CoC is more like an institution. I don't know their sales figures, but I got to figure it's a higher volume than that.

At Origins it usually has its own room for all the CoC and Delta Green games that people run there. For as long as I've been going to Origins it has steadily been popular with many events and full tables.

There's always a lot of events at GenCon too. I ran a few CoC RPGA modules when it was D20. I think they had the old Choasium system before that.

CoC always struck me as a great game for one-shots in particular. I've always seen a lot of it at every Con or gameday I've gone to. It's got a good presence at that kind of venue, IMX.

I have a few old RPGA CoC adventures c. 1983 or so IIRC. Given the CoC outlasted the RPGA, I think the game's done fine even though it was dropped ;)
