Call of Cthulhu movie trailer

Josh, you may want to check out "The Ressurected" Directed by Dan O'Bannon. Its a pretty good screen version of "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward." Granted it is overacted in some places, and they set it in the 90's rather than the 20's, but it is to this day the most accurate full length, hollywood budget HPL movie ever done, the second to that is Re-animator. In the "Lovecraft inspired style" section I am inclined to agree that Hellboy is so far the best, right infront of "In the Mouth of Madness."

I make the distinction because there are really good shorts that do Lovecraft much better justice than anything else. This is interesting because HPLs style seems more suited for the short story than the novel. I wonder if translations of his work are better as short films? Perhaps.

In this respect the best one in the "inspired style" is undoubtedly "The Visage." Direct translation award (that I have seen) goes to "The Lonesome Death of Jody Verril" which is an adaptation of "The Color out of Space." Staring none other than Steven King. Ones I have heard that are amazing are "The Music of Eric Zahn," and "Cool Air."

The reason I am excited for the upcomming year is that several longer productions will be finished: "Late Bloomer" (references to the shadow out of Insmouth) "The Unnameable" (Randolph carter winds up in one of his stories) "Experiment 17" (Nazis and the necronomicon)(This could also just be a fake trailer, but I hope not the others are real) and of course the subject of this thread "The Call of Cthulhu."

Aaron.

How does "Dagon" compare to these others you mentioned?

An almost completley different plot from its namesake short story. A bad movie, but Army of Darkness bad. Serviceable effects (though the CG for Dagon himself are hokey), and it's got 'heart,' like those involved enjoyed the movie, which makes it enjoyable. Then again this is just my oppinion. If only I could get my own Miskatonic U sweatshirt. :D

Dagon: crap B sci-fi movie from one of the 80's leading directors of crap B sci-fi movies. Also, more sexual creepiness from the man who brought us an animated severed head licking a bound naked woman in Reanimator.

The Resurrected: as Jester mentioned, the only halfway-faithful adaptation of a Lovecraft story that's ever been made. Has some laughably bad parts to it, but overall isn't terrible. Stars Prince Humperdink as Charles Ward.

As far as I'm concerned the base "Lovecraftian" movie out there is still Hellboy.
I love the comic and enjoyed the movie, but aside from the look of some of the monsters, Hellboy in either incarnation is not very Lovecraftian.

If you have been jonesing for a movie adaptation of a HPL story, then Dagon is well worth watching. Yeah, they didn't have a great budget and, yeah, the director likes his ladies naked and his bad guys kinky... but the story and some of the scenes are as close to HPL as we have ever gotten.

For those who can appreciate a grade school cartoon movie (circa late 1970s) version of HPL... check out "The Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath":

There is a trailer on there. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it is very faithful to the story. Including the flaws of the story, IMO.

I don't like silent movies, therefore I won't like this one. Plus, I didn't like the trailer, does look like crap. Sorry.

But for those who like it, enjoy your popcorn. I'd rather watch Dungeons and Dragons in the movie theater again.
