I need help building a world that I have been going through different seneranios for which I do not want to repeat what others have done in the past.

The Idea I want to do is create a world similar to earth of the 1940's but wanting both the horror and mythical/fantasy element in the mix. Necromantic or xenomorphic technological advanments, no hiding of the creatures, magic is well known and used.

Now for the problem I am having. Dragons,Wizards, Vampires and monst of the Stanadard D&D races are the most popular usage for the ones in charge of a campaign world and I am looking to do something different. What are some good ideas or examples of creature or theme for use with an alternate earth in the 1930's where the supernatural is very common in every day/night life?

Well, there are mind flayers...if you want a psionic twist to things.

Maybe a better idea would be a fellow who can afford to keep wizards chained in his basement, and most of his forces are the resulting advanced golems (smart enough to think on their own, if not brilliant). That would perhaps give things a spin like Skycaptain and the World of Tomorrow...

Stick with humans being in charge. With the time period gotta have the Prohibition. I mean Al Capone as a dragon (they make good thugs) would keep players toes inline, even if they don't know he's one. Might make a change of pace, when it Eliot Ness tries to bring him down.

For the most part though I'd keep the monsters in the underground. Not on top. Depending on how much magic you want for the world, you gotta watch the science/magic levels

Sound helpful. :)

Don't know if that's any use?

I'm quite a fan of their deadlands game, this one appeals, but havn't tried it...

War rips Europe asunder, drowning its verdant forests and plains in Allied and Axis blood. Cities burn. Men die by the thousands. And a mad Austrian searches the globe for ancient occult artifacts to tighten his iron grip on the world! But where there is violence and horror, there are monsters. Hideous things that stalk the forests of the Ardennes, lay in wait on the steppes of Russian, or prowl the ruined streets of Stalingrad. Into their slavering maws walk heroes, men and women who survive not only the horror of war, but the terror of the things that prey in its blood-stained shadows.

The Weird War Two Roleplaying Game tells the tales of these grim heroes. Some want to save the world, others just want to survive the night.

This 192-page book deals with the Western Front and the last desperate days of the Third Reich. Weird War Two uses the D20 system, but with a few special tricks to make things a little grittier, realistic, and horrific. The game includes rules for vehicles, modern weapons, suppressive fire, and our own special "Bennies!"

Ok I just thought or realized a monster that I can use as a pc race(s) and have come to be the power force behind my setting's current state. The Yuan-Ti, lizardfolk and and/or any other reptilian humaniod race. I can see this fitting the history I have written and very little to no current published campaigns has done this yet. Im not doing Dragons cause i see them as something else, plus I have a different plan for them anyways. :]

I can this being very different and with certain results from online research I had to do this well supernatural/paranormal reasons for my idea.
