Campaign help

Hi!

I am trying to get a new FR campaign going. I had a idea about what would happen if the Great Black dragon of Cormyr never where killed? How would Cormyr "look" today?
The story is then to let the PC:s change the past.

I had an idea about to let the Characters start at level 20 and then be killed by the great dragon. When revived they remember nothing about there special powers(lev 1). At every neew level thet "remember" new skills and so on.

Hmm

Nice idea. But what help do you want? Ideas for the dragon? Start the game with a big battle against the big dragon?

I would need som help figuring out what Cormyr would look like "today" if the black dragon had won. I am not very good at Cormyr or Forgotten Realms history. Any ideas are welcome.

are you refering to the dragon that killed the old cormyrian king? or perhaps some other dragon i have not heard of (or simply can't remember)? how long ago was this dragon killed?

if it was long ago, i would make it a haven for the cult of the dragon where their dogma was the state religion. there was a recent group of invaders that were warded off by a coalition of nations led by cormyr, that would not have happened quite the same, perhaps the dragon nation is stil at war with the invaders. perhaps it was taken by the invaders and the pc's are some kind of resistance force.

if it's the one that killed auzoun, i can't be of much help, there would be alot of goblins. that's all i know. actually i'm not even sure of that.

as you may be able to tell cormyrian history is not a class i took in college, most of my FR campaigns have centered on the sword coast, the north and anauroch and i quit reading the FR novels quite awhile ago (salvatore not included)

The true Purple Dragon

The black dragon metioned is the one that got Cormyr its "Purple Dragon" status. The dragon (I can't remember the name) was so ancient that its scales began to give it a purple hue.
The dragon was killed I think around the 1000year mark D.R. or so by the king, who was young, and the current Lord High Wizard, whom I can't remember.
Anyhow, rarely did the black dragon visit upon Suzail or any of the major cities that I can remember, so I doubt there would be much real difference in Cormyr. In fact, with a surge in adventuring companies, likely some other extremely high level party would hunt down and kill it.
I like the idea of resurrection and the campaign idea you have. I'm just not sure what differences would be there for the party to challenge. Possibly a hunt of vengeance for the party against the dragon (but remember the party would have had to die The First Time at the hands of the Purple Dragon some 370years ago or so, unless you eliminate the "true" death of that dragon).
I suggest reading the Cormyr Trilogy...

Personally, I would suggest sticking with FR canon for such major events as this if this is a new campaign otherwise there is a risk that your players will come in too many preconceived notions that it prove too unwieldy and time-consuming to dispel.

Plus, as a campaign villain, I'm not so sure about using a black dragon. Typically, they're not really into alliances etc....

Anyway, so that my reply is not entirely negative, why not instead change it so that the "purple" dragon returns as an enhanced dracolich, like the "Creeping Doom" featured on the WOTC website (and in the free, "Cult of the Dragon", download for 2E)?

Cheers
