Here's a couple items from my 4e D&D campaigns that are intended to grow along with the PCs. From my Forgotten Realms Loudwater campaign: AMULET OF AMAUNATOR – Level 6 ITEM BOON These golden sun-disk Amulets are crafted in Orlbar by the dwarf master goldsmith Vergin, then blessed by the Leader of the Light of the Sun Order on the altar of the Temple of Amaunator in Orlbar. They are normally bestowed on Champions of Amaunator, and on others who have done great service to the Light of the Sun. Without the appropriate ceremony they do not confer any benefits, but are worth around 50gp for the gold value and crafting. An Evil or Chaotic Evil character who wears one takes 4d6 Radiant damage, and the Amulet is destroyed, turning to worthless dust. The Amulets bestow the following benefits to Lawful Good, Good or Unaligned wearers of 6th level or higher who have the Amulet bestowed by the Leader of the Light of the Sun in a ceremony at the Temple of Amaunator in Orlbar. These benefits are lost if the wearer becomes Evil or Chaotic Evil, the amulet then inflicts 4d6 Radiant damage and is destroyed. Wearer Level Enhancement Bonus to Fortitude, Reflex & Will (replaces Inherent bonus): 6-10 +2 11-15 +3 16-20 +4 21-25 +5 26-30 +6 A follower of Amaunator may use the Amulet as a Holy Symbol, with an Enhancement bonus as listed above. Power (Daily): No Action The first time that day the wearer takes Necrotic damage, the amulet shines brightly. The amulet always reduces the Necrotic Damage according to the wearer level, as follows. This reduction stacks with any other Damage Resistance. If the damage is reduced to 0 then other on-hit effects from the attack do not trigger. Wearer Level Necrotic Damage Reduction 6-10 5 11-15 10 16-20 15 21-25 20 26-30 30 From my Wilderlands 'Southlands' game: THE ARMOUR OF BONDOR - ARTIFACT According to legend, the armour of Bondor was worn by the Altanian hero Bondor in his great struggle against the Orichalan Dragon Lords. It was forged for him by the legendary dwarf smith Durin Ironbane, patterned after the scales of the great dragons controlled by the Orichalan Dragon Lords. When Bondor ascended to the Heavens as God of Swords, he left his Armour behind, to be worn by future heroes of Altanis. It appears as a hauberk of black iron scale, with a large (5,000gp) diamond inset in the chest, over the heart. It has the following properties: Masterwork Scale Armour. The armour draws from the wearer’s own power. It has no Enhancement bonus per se, use wearer’s Inherent bonus if any (eg +1 at 6th-8th, +2 at 9th-13th, +3 at 14th-18th). It provides an Armour bonus as follows: Wearer Level Armour Bonus 1-5 N/A – The Armour deems the wearer unworthy and teleports away. 6-10 +9 11-15 +10 16-20 +11 21-25 +12 26-30 +13 Grants wearer Resist 5 to Fire, Lightning & Acid. At 11th level this increases to Resist 10. At 21st level this increases to Resist 15. Daily Power, Healing: Wearer may regain hit points once per day as a Free action, as if he had spent a Healing Surge. If the wearer is killed, as an immediate reaction the diamond flares brightly and the armour teleports him and all his equipment to a previously keyed temple of Bondor within 5,000 miles, and Raises him with 1 hit point and the standard Raise Dead penalty. This process destroys the inset diamond. The armour regains this property only when a new 5,000gp diamond is inset. This diamond must be ritually purified by a priest of Bondor, and inset to the armour on the god’s altar (6th level Ritual), which then keys the armour to the temple in which the ritual is performed. The armour is currently keyed to the Temple of Bondor in Bisgen. The armour is an Artifact, and it cannot be destroyed by normal means. It is rumoured that only the combined simultaneous breath of Red, Blue and Black Elder dragons can destroy the armour. According to legend it may only be worn by a true-blooded Hero of Altanis, and will teleport away should another try to don it (even without the diamond), reappearing in a Temple of Bondor.
