Okay, this first part is being written on a ps3, so i'm not going to do alot of writing at the moment, but i will elaborate l later. We've all wanted to do it. Feel no shame. No matter how badly your mind throws up, we've all probably thought one of two things, or both; What would it be like if (insert favorite setting A) were to meet (insert favorite setting B)? or what would it be like if (insert real world place) were to meet (insert favorite setting)? Either these two questions have entered your mind, or some sort of variation of them. We'll i had the latter thought, and it was just to juicy to ignore.... What would happen if an american city were to be sent to Eberron? It was actually pretty fun, and it provoked alot of thought about running crossover campaigns, which i will be putting here.... just as soon as i get onto a real computer. Hang on. Sorry, long day.... Anyways, i'm not really going to cover "When Campaigns meet" sort of thing, cause i just remembered about Spelljammers. Okay first part And the entire city just disappeared in the flash of an eye! This is the type of campaign i ran, so this is where i'm going to begin. The quintessential "modern american city get's warped into fantasy world" story is probably the Ring of Fire series written by Eric Flint. A small town from West Virginia get's thrown into Germany during the thirty years war. Okay not "Fantasy", but it would probably work as a low magic setting. I based my campaign set in eberron loosely around this. (By the way Eric Flint made 1632 and 1633 available for free on baens publishing company). I'm going to use my campaign as an example because i don't want to spoil anything about TRoF. Send the town somewhere "logical" Okay, let's look at 1632 (it's not really spoiling anything). The town of Grantville was sent into southern germany. Specifically Thuringia. What would they have to face? Brutal mercenaries at first. But it's not that big of a threat. The mercenaries are armed with muskets, and brute strength. The americans are armed with machine guns, vehicles, grenades, etc., etc. The undisciplined brutes don't stand a chance. It was a good way to start out the story. If Grantville were to have been warped into, let's say France rather than Germany. You can bet that the town would have been eventually overrun, and destroyed. Sure they have advanced technology but eventually you have to run out of ammo, and France has entire armies. In my own campaign, i sent the town of Liberty (a fictional town i came up with, if you happen to be from a city who's name is Liberty, this is coincidental) into the Torlaac Moor (Southern Darguun). I'm not a very cruel DM, so i set up a situation where it was easy for a "United States of Khorvaire" to be created. Still you may not want to make it easy, which is fine, but don't make it impossible. Limitations Will come later.
