Campaigns of Intrigue, Adventure, and Spy-Gadgets!!!

Sir Elton

First Post
Well, well, well;

Today, on my Atlantis game, one of my players is intrigued with her character's brother; Tashiro. Tashiro is a secret agent working for the Intelligence and Analysis Service (Japan's CIA). She said that they didn't know everything about him.

Which hit on a deliciously wicked idea. I may have the original Spycraft, but after Atlantis comes a campaign based on the world of Spies. But what I like to ask is how many people enjoy roleplaying Mission: Impossible, Get Smart, James Bond, Flint, Austin Powers, and the world of spies, traitors, secret agents, and double crosses?

Playing in the spy game is fun if you have a group dynamic that can run it right. Spy games focus on the premise that "all war is deception" (SunTzu). If you have a player in the group that just wants to blow things up because it's fun or if you have a DM that can't pull off the intrigue... you are in for a rough night.

When things work out... it is suspenseful fun. "I love it when a plan comes together..." (Hannibal Smith - A Team).

Kroh is right on target, even though there are 'gratuitous scenes of graphic violence', for the most part spy campaigns happen on the minute' level of roleplaying. I would say that the White Wolf games would be considered Hack n' Slash in the face of a properly run and executed spy game.

Direct confrontation with the enemy, with the exception of the epic 'end scene' battle where someone is going to die, is detremental to the concept of stealth. While James Bond is fun to watch and read, a spy exhibiting such casual disregard for such notions as cover identity, moles and secret contacts would have a life span of about seven seconds. :D

But spy campaigns can be very rewarding and intrigue is always deliciously fun, especially when the party reaches the 'ding - lights come on' moment and realizes that things aren't what they seemed.
