D&D 5E Can a Player gain an advantage from a Passive Skill that required no effort or cost?

I agree.

Totally aside: Rather than moving furniture around, the fighter also could stand where the enemy's gonna be and say "Nope, can still see you, tuck your elbow in."

Just a little to the left ... Nope, wait, rotate your head .7 degrees counter-clockwise, ok, great. If the enemy stands exactly in this position, he will definitely not see you behind that potted plant. Planning ahead for the win!

Putting aside if i accept it or not for the moment... Do you think that what he has put is balanced when comparing to other Paladin Sub classes?

If anything, I think its not as strong as the other available options. The additional spell list can vary this greatly, Paladin subclasses are balanced along 3 different axis, Channel Divinity, Expanded Spell List, and Auras. Without knowing the other two, its hard to compare the overall balance but pulling a channel divinity from a cleric is a great way to do this. If you look at the Conquest paladin in XGE, they took the channel divinity from War domain.
