Candlecaster

A question to anyone using the Candlecaster from Tome & Blood.

If I am correct, to trigger a spell stored in a Candle you lit the Candle as a standard action, but the spell triggers at the start of your next turn (in the next round). So you can lit the Candle and perform a move-equivalent action during the first round, and do whatever you want in the next round (usually worse than casting a 1-action spell, but better than casting a full-round spell, which opens you to disruption for a longer time). Anyway, the Candle burns for an amount of time equal to the spell duration. Is it ok?

Can you store a spell with a very long casting time in a Candle? In case you can, does it always take the same time to lit the Candle and trigger the spell?

i read through the PrC recently, and i don't think that this issue was addressed in the writing. i'd say it was a DM call, but i'd be inclined to say that it would still be a standard action. regadless of the spell locked in the candle, i can't see it taking an entire six seconds to light!

hmmm ... then again, i suppose it could be argued that the candle's wick needs to actually be in contact with the flame for that long to actually catch. you could add an aditional cost to the scribing of the candle (perhaps in xp) in order to have it remain a standard action. (which the rules specifically state it is.)

not sure if i was actually any help to you or not, but um ... good luck? :p

Candle Caster should have been a feat: Craft Magic Candle. At best.

I completely agree and actually have a feat IMC by that very name. I have used magic candles (and candle making) since 1e when the witch class first appeared way back in Dragon.

It's a concept that's different, has lots of flavour, and could do a lot to spice up a setting that has it. Just because it doesn't provide extra utility in the dungeon doesn't mean it shouldn't be a prestige class.
