car free in honolulu?

First Post
So the hubby and I are going to be in honolulu for about three days before the main event in Kona, and I'm trying to decide if we need to rent a car or not. apparently the hotel we're staying at will be charging us for parking to the tune of 20 bucks a day, aside from car rental costs. So does anyone have any experience with how easy it is to get around the island without a car? As an added wrinkle, there will be a one year old along for the ride.

I'd recommend a car, so you can see the island on your own time. In the same light however, I wouldn't rent a car for the whole time. There are shuttles from the hotels to the airport, so you could even attempt to pick-up and drop-off the rental on the same day. Thus avoiding the added charge.

I recommend not having the car the whole time, because there is lots to do right within walking distance, and there are several forms of public transportation. Here's some more info on all that.

Most of the hotels have tons of brochures and advise givers. There are probably tours that go around Ohau, but I'm not sure so can't be much help there.

You will love the big island!!! Kona is the good side of the island :) Sorry recently did this trip, so lots of things are still bookmarked and fresh in my head.

thanks, I'm trying to talk the hubby into either doing without entirely or just renting a car one day. (its only two full days there and one we'll probably take the roberts bus to the polynesian cultural center). Everything seems to be telling me its a 20-30 dollar taxi to and from the airport, and the hotel is walking distance from some nice things.

The only thing you really won't be able to get to on Oahu w/o a car is the North Shore/Wiemea Bay/Shark's Cove. Great beach/rec area and much less crowded than the Honolulu beaches.

Have fun...HI is great!
