Carrying Loads

The current table for carrying loads (from the SRD):
Code:
[size=-1][color=white]
Table: Carrying Loads

Max     Check          ----- Speed -------
Load Dex Penalty (30 ft.) (20 ft) Run
----           ---     -------        --------       -------        ---

Medium         +3      -3             20 ft.         15 ft.         x4
Heavy          +1      -6             20ft.          15 ft.         x3
[/color][/size]
This does not seem steep enough given that a person carrying plate mail (lightly loaded) can perform skills with armor check penalties of +0 whereas if he wore it it would be -6 (IIRC).

Instead, the above table would remain the same for all things except ACP. ACP would be calculated as: -1 / 10 lbs of wt. OR the armor ACP, whichever is higher.

This models more closely the impact of encumbrance on skills, much like the Swim skill's special case. (Swim doesn't use ACP, but calls out a -1 / 5 lbs of wt. on checks.)

Thoughts?

only thought is that it gets to detailed ... (read: I'll just keep it as is, the rules don't really take into account the bulkiness of an item (sorta ... apparently many of the weapons weigh to much, but that might account for the bulkiness)

but I agree if you're carrying a large suit of platemail (bulky to say the least) in real life you'd be pretty encumbered. It would be easier to drop it then go to 'no encumbrence'.
