Caster level for multi-class

Suppose I have a character who is a Cleric(7)) / Wizard(5).

If I cast a Fireball, how many dice of damage does it do?

In other words, is my "caster level" 13, or is it 7 (divine) and 5 (arcane)?

7 cleric, 5 wizard.

so it does 5d6 damage.

while the division on magic is divine arcane, don't think of it that way for levels. A Wizard 7/Sorcerer 5 would still only do 7d6 damage with a fireball even though both classes are arcane in nature.

Your caster level for each class is separate as long as it has its own spellcasting progression. So for your character your Wizard caster level would be 5 and produce a 5d6 fireball.

However, if you went Wiz 3/Cleric 3/Mystic Theurge 4 (prestige class), you would have a caster level, spells known, and spells per day as a level 7 Wizard and level 7 Cleric. However, you wouldn't be getting the 5th level bonus feat of the Wizard, you would turn as a 3rd level cleric, base saves of +4/+3/+10, BAB of +5.

The feat Practised Spellcaster allows you to add the levels of all your casting classes together for your caster level. I just had a player in my campaign take it, just so he could get a bit of extra duration on a spell that the party needed for survival at the time.

That's not the way practiced spellcaster works.

It reads as follows..

Your caster level for the chosen spellcasting class increases by 4. This benefit can not increase your caster level to higher than your hit dice.

If Ki Ryn's character had that feat for both cleric and wizard, his caster levels would be
Cleric 11, and Wizard 9.

Um, no. That's not what it does.

Practised Spellcaster allows you to add 4 to the caster level of any one casting class you have, up to your total class levels or HD.

Thus, if I'm a fighter 3/cleric 3, and I buy the feat, my caster level for cleric spells is 6 (the total of my class levels). If I'm a fighter 8/cleric 3 and I get the feat, my caster level for cleric spells is 7 (3+4).

If I'm a wizard 4/cleric 4, I can raise either my cleric or wizard caster levels by 4 with the feat, but not both.
