I am currently playing in a Conan free-form game (i.e.: players only roleplay, DM handles all mechanics of which we don't know anything), and I much like it. What I see is that free-form is excellent for a PBEM, so I thought: why not run a C&C pbem? I want it to be pbem (seems to last longer than pbp?), but the ongoing story will be regularly posted either on the Playing the Game or Story Hour forum (don't know what's best, open to suggestions). So whoever is interested in a C&C pbem? The Rules: Castles & Crusades free-form. This first means that I am open to concepts out of the box. If someone wants to customize a class, or use a new one from some netbook out there, I am willing to work with the player to make what he wants. Then, the game will be about a story, not about game mechanics and dice resolution on emails (yet you will know what your PC abilities will be as you will create your character). Game begins at 3rd level. XP are handled as I see fit, not by the book. Houserules: There will be some twist on the rules that I am not telling you right away. There is for instance something peculiar about magic, but only one who plays a spellcaster will know it as he learns more about magic over the course of adventures... Magic is not a subject that everyone knows after all, but something shrouded in superstition and mystery. Otherwise, one of the houserules is: allegiances (ala d20 modern) instead of alignments. Another is: use of Sanity points as in CoC d20 and UA 3e! The Setting: This is the setting I am working on, and that you will discover as your characters adventure in it. Basically, it's a setting inspired from medieval Europe; in fact to get the right feel of it, just read the first book of the Elenium by David Eddings ("The Diamond Throne"). So the world is this: -- To the north the Highlands inspired by Scotland from medieval age. Many clans, and druidism as the prevalent faith. -- To the south, a land of rolling hills with a feudal culture inspired by France / UK from the middle ages. A single monotheirstic faith largely inspired by the Chrisitan faith / Helene Church of David Eddings, with magic-using clerics and Church knights. -- No gnomes and halflings, despite they exist in the setting. Preferably humans, but open to suggestions anyway if it fits my concept. Dwarves are like swiss mercenaries in this setting. Elves are either recluse spirit folk (so no PCs) or evil and reviled outcasts (so go for problems in human lands). -- Arcane magic exist but isn't widespread, and tend to be shun by the common folk, as black magic is hunted by the Church. Wizards are tolerated but often must have a license and are controlled... -- Cosmology: the most important thing is that the Shadow world overlaps the material world. It is an everchanging world of magic and chaos, shaped by the desires of those who inhabit it, but also of the wizards and sorcerers who draw on it for their magic. Alas, in the past a race of dark necromancers corrupted the Shadow world which is now a nightmare world in many places. -- Creatures: no weird stuff such as beholders, mimics, yrtak (*rolleyes*) or what not. Only creatures you could expect in medieval legends, such as trolls, demons, undead, etc. Players will learn more of the specifics according to what their characters are supposed to know. Anyone interested?
