I totally disagree that anything at all in ED has "more implications than Vancian magic" though ("as many" maybe, but that's my point). I just outright reject that. Vancian magic is hard-incompatible with the <em>vast</em> majority of fantasy fiction. The lack of a "flowing" magic system at all is an absolutely gigantic issue. Fundamentally you can't even represent most fantasy settings because of that.</p><p></p><p>Hit Points have endless and huge implications which seriously limit the range of fantasy D&D can actually do, too. I know people like to put different hats on D&D, but that's what's happening in most cases, and claiming D&D is "generic fantasy" is just laughable.</p></blockquote><p></p>
