Character suggestions for a solo campaign

Julie and I miss her
Julie, my wife, is thinking of running Wizard's Amulet/The Crucible of Freya for me as a start to a solo campaign. It would be run in Kalamar on the coast of the Reanaaria Bay.

Since it is a solo campaign, I was thinking of trying a Gestalt character from Unearthed Arcana. So, you guys, what is your take on this ? Any suggestions ?

I would like to mention that tis would be Julie's second try at DMing. The first one went so-so. I would like to have something that doesn't cause to many headaches to my dear wife ! :)

P.S. : This may lead to the Kalamar coin trilogy if all goes well.

Gestalt character? Fighter/Wizard, or maybe Barbarian/Wizard. High BAB, big HD, lots of skill points, Spellcasting. Nuff said.
 

I just finished a solo campaign with a friend (I was DM'ing). He played his character from level 13 to level 47.

He played a fighter with one level of cleric (Farlanghn). This combo worked very well. He bought wands of cure light for curing, and wands of lesser restoration. With this, you cover many bases. The fact that he worshiped Farlanghn meant that he could reroll a die roll once per day (very useful in solos), and he picked the feat divine might, which he powered with his turning attempts.

He was a two-weapon fighter. If you decide to go board and sword, also pick the feat divine shield. Boost that charisma.

A single-classed paladin also works, or a single class cleric (although your combat prowess will be much lower).

Bard/Fighter, for the same reasons as the Scottish Play. Get some spells, BAB is somewhere twixt 3/4 and full, good skills, good mix of abilities and feats. Skills can be tailored to become any kind of social character, or even a sneaky rogue type.
 

I ran Wizard's Amulet and Crucible of Freya as a solo adventure when I first started DMing. It was rather difficult to keep everything together in the final battle, but I managed it. I have a detailed spoiler review of it in the reviews section if you want her to read it.

For solo character, I think a Druid/Barbarian could be good. The Barbarian for attack and hit points, and the druid for spellcasting, healing, and spontaneous nature's allies for backup critters.
 

For solo campaigns, I really like rogues. Rogues are diverse enough in skills that they can do a lot of things without needing help from other classes. Sneaking and bluffing can be especially useful in an urban setting where often you want to stay as inconspicuous as possible. The use magic device skill can be very handy when combined with a cure light wounds wand, and so can decipher script for reading signs in different languages.

An inexperienced DM isn't really ideal for a solo campaign. There will need to be a lot of tweaking to keep the game challenging and balanced. Even before it's time for the leadership feat, I would recommend you hire some muscle to go with you. Make him a twin brother with identical stats, but a different class to help explain the two-heads-one-mind thing where they think alike. A second character will allow you use of your rogue sneak attack ability, and will make combat a little easier to adjust for the DM.

That sounds cool, but if you go the rogue route, I HIGHLY recommend taking the Invisible Blade PrC from Complete Warrior. No rogue is complete without that PrC.
