Some people are just so committed to the idea of "being awesome" that they can't bear the thought of their character missing, failing to deal significant damage, or falling on his face during what might otherwise be an easy skill check. I admit to having this complex; missing and failing skill checks just annoys the crap out of me. Low damage numbers and so forth are less bothersome. Of course, I usually DM, so frankly my dice are used as sound effects at best. However, what makes me happy is not when my monsters/NPCs are awesome, but when the players are; I hate it when they fail something I expected them to succeed in, and feel bad when they miss and so forth. We usually use defense rolls instead of flat AC anyway, so as far as I know, no one knows I'm using the rules as guidelines and actual numbers as suggestions. I'm not defending the use of cheating dice, but these are probably the type of people who use them. If you're the DM and know that one of your players is this type of gamer, consider giving them certain areas where you can let them shine, and adjust the rest of your monsters/challenges accordingly. So long as they're enjoying themselves, they may be less likely to notice that even though they almost always roll well and usually do good damage, things tend to mysteriously have more HP around them, and their companions' blows - which hit and damage at generally more reasonable rates - still drop things fairly frequently... The others may just be sociopathic bastard types who are out to get you. These types should be avoided in all walks of life. If you know any, consider telling them they can't play with you and/or hitting them with a brick. ;)
