aka...Yet Another Food Thread
Christmas is a delicious time of year, and I cannot be the only one up to my elbows in flour for a good portion of it. What kind of cookies and treats do you and your families make at this time of year?
We have certain cookies that it would be sacriledge to omit, and recently I've been adding new things to the list.
Chocolate Chip: my little brother eats these by the bowlful, so I need a triple batch.
White Chocolate Macadamia Nut: I started these last year, and they're crunchy and topped with colored sugar.
Nut Balls, aka Russian Tea Cakes: They're made with ground walnuts, and I thought they were a family recipe until I saw a similar one on a bag of powdered sugar.
Envelopes, aka Foldovers, aka "Aunt Martha's Xmas Cookies": Cream cheese pastry filled with cherry or apricot pastry filling and dusted with powdered sugar. The funny thing is this recipe came from my grandmother...but there's no Aunt Martha in any branch of that family that we can find.
Pizelle: An italian cookie made in an iron much like a waffle iron with a snowflake pattern. The batter contains a dozen eggs.
Caramel Walnut Brownies: For my dad, who's a sucker for nuts.
Pecan Tassies: Tiny little pecan tarts, made with the same cream cheese pastry as the foldovers.
Fruit bars: My mom usually makes some sort of bar cookie with nuts, oatmeal and fruit fillings.
Chocolate Candy Cane Cookies: I never made these before today, but theyre good! A chewy chocolate cookie with crushed peppermints on top.
In the last few years, I've also started making candy.
Peanut brittle
Candied Almonds (to replace the toffee I've made in years past)
Chocolate dipped pretzels
Dark chocolate pecan bark
and of course, with less than a week to Christmas, I'm royally behind.
