D&D General Cities - gazeteers, adventures, etc. Please share your resources

Eyes of Nine

Everything's Fine
Inspired by another thread, I just had a thought about a "city" campaign, that takes place in a bunch of cities. The party start as a bunch of Rat Catchers - yes, just like a Warhammer Fantasy campaign; but are quickly noticed by the "Custodians Guild" for their skills. The Custodians Guild of course cleans/sweeps up more than just floors and the like. I could see the party making choices that will take them more down the path of cleaning up after crimes; or trying to clean things up before the bad stuff even happens, depending. Maybe even they get some sort of "rep" and maybe even "regular" clients who request their services. Eventually a throughline will become apparent, and I'll lean into that and send them somewhere for a big showdown.

Anyway, any resources people can point to for city adventures? Either in the published stuff; or across the DMs Guild and beyond? Doesn't have to be D&D even - Pathfinder, OSR, system-less, I'm open to it all. Also open to games that have good rules for running city adventures (he looks at his not-yet-read copy of Cities Without Number on his shelf). Just needs to be available in at least .pdf form now.

Ones I have used and recomend:

FR8 - Cities of Mystery
Don't let the FR title drive you away; it's a pretty generic take on generating and running city-based games in just about any world and game edition. You can also get it as a Print-On-Demand book. The original had a fold out poster battlemat with fold-up cities; if you get the PDF you can print out your own on cardstock and put them together (I wouldn't suggest cutting up the POD version...).

I got this book for my wife, she's used it for generating settlements, and it also has a chapter on encounters, rumors and other useful information for urban-based adventuring.

Best free Random city generator I've run across - quite powerful, quick and you can fill in a "key" defining what certain buildings are.

You could always use Campaign Guide: Zakhara - Adventures in the Land of Fate. It includes a gazetteer section on the city of Huzuz, which is loosely based on Baghdad. The gazetteer breaks the city into districts, with maps and a table of random encounters for each one. It also includes an introductory adventure called - wait for it - "The Rat Catchers."

You could also try Midnight in the City of Brass; it's an adventure set in the City of Brass on the Plane of Fire. It also includes a gazetteer section for the titular City, again with random encounters for each district.

Full disclosure: I wrote both of these.
