city building: searching for thread

I'm looking to do some city design--what I'm not seeing in the rules is all that much detail on siege warfare, other than here's what a heavy catapult does, how much damage a 10'thick wall can take, etc. Any more concrete guidelines (no pun intended) on sieges--also I'm looking for any official rules on stuff like how long it takes for fires from flaming catapults to be put out...

also I've been looking here and other boards for a cool thread I saw last summer when I first joined where buildings and business were being suggested for someone's City--many of the entries were jokey, but some were quite good...does this strike anyone as familiar?

Because d20 it is hard to look for real city. Some real castles or cities it just takes one spell and whole city could have been destroyed. Or some castles on hard to take over place. Think about stone to mud or similar spell. See that rubble at see. Well that is what is left from that city.

There are some real castles I have been looking that just doesn't make any sense in high magic world like they did in a real one - and real one is only one we "have any experience about".

So everything depends about how your campaign world is setted. High or low magic.

I heartliy recommend CityWorks from Fantasy Flight Games, one of their Legends & Lairs books. It discusses things like fires in a city, as well as crowds, and more.

City, by David MacAuley (sp ?), is also a good resource. This non-fiction, heavily illustrated book discusses the design of a Roman town.

Don't forget to download the City Design web enhancement for the 3.5 DMG from the Wizards of the Coast web site. No one should ever turn down a free resource. :D

As for other aspects, Jacen makes a very good point. Much of the design will depend on how much magic is available.

If you are looking for more information on construction rules, or on kingdom-building, you may find the books discussed in this thread helpful.
