City Government in a realistic setting

Hi, I am creating a realistic medieval setting and i want to know how a city was governed and the precise occupations people had in the city government regarding law, tax etc. I already have the expeditious retreat book and although it is a fine book, it does not go into details about city govenment. Can you guys help me ? Do you have suggestions and internet sources or can you give me a workable city model ? Thanks a lot for your trouble.

I'm very familliar with *modern* city government, but I'm unclear as to what changes would have to be made to regress back to medieval times. I'm also highly sceptical that the governments would work consistently across, for example, the ten largest medieval cities.
