I am a spielfriek (game lover) in training, and currently have a collection of 61 or 62 German, and some American, board games (you can see my collection at www.boardgamegeek.com and look up TommyTutone). For two players, I strongly recommend the following: Lord of the Rings - the original board game created by the genius Reiner Knizia. In this game, two to five players work together to get the ring to Mount Doom. I don't own the expansions yet, but am hoping to change that soon. Schotten-Totten - you can also pick up Battlelines, though S-T is more 'pure' in strategy. You play cards to one of 9 stones, trying to lay a better 3-card hand than your opponent. Claim 5 of the 9 stones, or any three in a row to win. Caesar and Cleopatra - not the BEST game out there for two, but the beautiful cards, and the fact that the wife will play the sultry Cleopatra to your indignant Caesar as you try to win the influence of the Senate makes for a good time. Puerto Rico - ideally for three to five players, there are two player variants at the Geek. My wife LOVES this game as it allows you to build up your island with buildings (each provides special benefits) and plantations. Carcassonne with or without expansions, or buy the new Hunters & Gatherers (I have all of them) - the game, as played creates a beautiful layout and scores are often quite close, making for more fun. It can be played for up to five players, and you will forever call your game pieces in any game 'meeples'.
