Climbing on a large creatures back

kramis

First Post
I had an interesting situation come up in my game tonight that I had to make a quick rule on (which I wasn't really satisfied with). I was wondering if anyone had any more involved rules for dealing with this.

Basically, a player was fighter a large Basilisk (advanced to double hit dice) and wanted to climb on the creature's back. I couldn't think of any really good way to deal with this. A grapple check didn't seem appropriate since it should be much easier than trying to wrestle the thing ... and in fact, it should be easier the larger it is not harder, and it doesn't hurt or inhibbit the creature in anyway (though might make it harder for the creature to bite the player).

Balance checks seemed the obvious choice on the player's end (after a melee touch attack and a climb), but opposed to what sort of check from the creature? That was the hard part. What sort of skill or ability check does the creature use to try and "throw off" the player?

Well, how about giving the thing a grapple check, but not counting its size bonus. Thus it gets all the bonus of its natural strength and fighting ability.

This is covered in one of the main books under climb.

Something about opposed checks - character climb skill against creatures strength.

Climb wins - hang on
Strength wins - fall off.

Can't be more specific, but did read it in DMG or PH last week. Example given was dragons.
