yikes, its pretty much generally accepted on the internet that this fantastic four movie looks dreadful. generally accepted on the same level as "jar jar sucks" The casting is awful. Jessica Alba as sue storm? Ugh. The nitpick of Mr Fantastic not looking a day older than Torch. I'm not sold on the thing's look but that can obviously be touched up. Julian Mcmahon as Doom? shoot me now. but i'll get back to Doom. Previously the reports said that Human Torch would only be able to "light up" his hands and not his whole body. I happily commented that even this early clip seems to say that isnt the case. The director of the flick also directed Barber Shop and again, the early reports on the film were that it would be played to a certain extent as an urban comedy. That would be gruesome. Luckily, the most recent reports say that this is not the case. So hey, things are looking up, some of my concerns have already been alleviated right? But then there's Doom. As I already said Julian Mcmahon just does not come across like a good Doom. We KNEW that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan would be perfect as Xavier and Magneto. We suspected that Tobey Maguire would be a good Spider-man. We were positive that Afleck would make a weak Daredevil. Basically, those of us read comics have correctly been able to assess how well any actor we know would be at a role. We were unsure of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine until about 5 minutes in the first X-movie. But this cast in general and Doom specifically looks like a giant mistake. Also, the latest reports I read on Doom which was within the last 2 weeks say that his armor is HIS cosmic ray given super-power. As in...Doom will be on the ship with the FF, and when the others get their powers...he gets organic armor. The pic that circulated of the face mask looked ok, but very strange without the familiar green cloak. There was also a low quality (possibly even fake or incomplete) shot of his "armor" that didnt evoke the right feel. I've also heard that Doom will be American. Now, none of these are absolute deal-breakers. Together, they seem to indicate that the suits are interfering with the movie to try to cut out some of the more "comic-booky" aspects. This is never a good idea. Theres been numerous conversations about this movie in my internet geek circles (which I thought included ENWorld, but I dont always remember exactly where I read every discussion) where people have expressed their fears and doubts about this movie, hence my choice of the word dreadful. To say that I think this is a finished clip and thats how i "know" its dreadful is just silly. Because "dreadful" will always be an opinion, not a fact. And my original post says "this movie STILL looks like it'll blow" which clearly implies that I already had the feeling that this movie would suck before I saw the footage. Maybe I'm wrong. I HOPE I'm wrong. I didnt think the first X-Men movie would be as good as it was. And I didnt expect the Hulk movie to be as bad as it was. So I'm not perfect. But between this movie and BatmanBegins, I think 2005 is the year that kills the comic book movie trend.
