C&C didn't have enough of the flavor I was looking for, so I made some substantial changes. Now I'm gearing up to run a heavily house-ruled C&C game based on RC D&D and original D&D. Players can choose from four races (dwarf, elf, halfling, human) and six classes (fighter, magic-user, cleric, thief, monk, bard - one for each prime), although race and class are separate. There are no abilty score requirements for classes (although there are for demihuman races), no demihuman level limits, and any race can dual or multiclass. I've tried to get away from the unified mechanic by using a d6 roll to listen at doors, for initiative, for surprise, and 2d6 for morale checks for monsters and hirelings and for turning undead. We do use SIEGE checks instead of traditional attribute checks to pull off the RC D&D general skills and also for thief skills. We use the RC weapon mastery rules too. Monsters stats come exclusively from the 3LB + Greyhawk (with the optional Greyhawk damage rules), some Blackmoor, the Strategic Review, and early Dragons. The spell selection is from the RC with the number of saves and skill checks for each ability score balanced so that no prime is more useful than others. There are no 0 level spells, and clerics don't get a spell until second level. With regard to your changes, I think almost everyone who plays C&C does something about the barbarian. I like your idea of not placing real limits on the number of times a barbarian can rage over the course of an adventure but instead making the player choose the situations in which he wants to use the ability. Surrounded by orcs? Good time to do it! Skirmishing in close quarters with a bunch of friends and some mobile foes? Not so much. I also like your smite 1/encounter for the paladin. They he'll actually get to use it! Just make sure that the attempt is ruined on a miss, and I think you're pretty well balanced. The rapid shot and flying kick abilities are something that I would let anyone do with a successful SIEGE check, so I probably wouldn't spell them out as class abilities.
