Yesterday I noticed a dead tree leaning out over a fairly busy secondary road (Waldo Rood) near my home. It is cracked at the bottom, and looks like it could break and fall at any moment. (We had a severe thunderstorm a few days ago, with wind.) When we (the family) went out to pick up some dinner, we passed the tree again. I decided to call someone about it. If it broke, it could fall on a passing car (many), a car could hit it, or it could block steady traffic for a long time. I called the city office, but it is closed on Sundays. We tried finding the DOT in the phone book, but couldn't. So I decided to call the police department (not 911). I explained to the officer on the phone what the situation was (not an emergency), and he said they'd send someone over to look at it. He then asked for my name and phone number. I figured they just wanted to have a record to prevent/catch "false alarms" and crank calls. I gave him my name and my cell phone number. After dinner, on our way home, we went up Waldo Rood again. I saw a city truck pulling onto that street, coming off of the street that runs in front of my home. I thought, "well, that's good that they are checking it out so quickly (less than an hour), but why was the truck on our residential street?" The street that runs in front of our home does connect with another secondary road, so you can cut through the neighborhood. But it is not a shortcut, and it is not easier. You don't avoid any lights, stop signs, or intersections by cutting through the neighborhood. It actually takes longer because you have to go slow through the narrower street. Seeing the city truck, I turned around to see if he was indeed checking out the tree. He was. We went home. I wondered if the city truck had stopped at our house to talk with me or ask for directions. I had given the cops my name, and they could easily find my address. Anyway, I put that "twist" out of my mind. I was happy they had someone check out the tree situation. Maybe they'll cut it down. Later that night, I went to see a movie. On my way home, at about 11:00, I was at a traffic light intersection, about to turn onto Waldo Rood. (It is my normal way home.) Across the intersection was a police car. He turned onto Waldo Rood before me. Seeing a police car is not unusual, but I did joke with myself that if he turns down my house road, I'd get paranoid. On cue with my thoughts, he turned on his signal light, then turned down my street. ?? I followed, of course. The cop continued past my house, and I turned on to my driveway. OK. I'm not the paranoid type. And I'm not really "worried" about anything regarding this. But it is really weird. If a coincidence, isn't it amazing that I happen to be right there for both instances, on the same day, right after the phone call? If not a coincidence, why? Quasqueton
