Collecting books for 3.x

So now with the impending 4th edition, which 3.x books are going to become the 'must have' books? In OD&D it's woody's and OCE's. In 1st it's orange Palace of the Silver Princess and Up the Garden Path. In 2nd it's Planescape stuff. So what books are rare in d20/3.x. I can see the one shots like CoCd20 and WoTd20 but for major WotC releases I don't know.

What do you think?

Oh, well there's no question that the prominent d20 book was Magical Medieval Society Western Europe. And to update that they'll have to ... have to ... do nothing.

Jeeze. It's like JoeB is the Warren Buffett of indie RPGs.

The original Rappan Atthuk modules already border on collectible, as does Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. I suspect that other early modules will become similarly collectible, as will some of the high quality, low print run, early D&D supplements from companies like Atlas games, Paradigm Concepts, etc.

Player's Handbook
Dungeon Master's Guide
Monster Manual

Seriously, though:

Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords
Expanded Psionics Handbook
Complete Warrior
Complete Arcane
Complete Divine
Complete Adventurer
Complete Mage
Player's Handbook II

Of course, that's only if you like crunch/aren't afraid to make some changes to suit your game. IMO, that's where most of the best material from 3.x can be found.

If you like fluff:

Draconomicon
Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting
Eberron Campaign Setting

If you like mega powergaming/munchkinism, most of the really ridiculous stuff can be found in (in addition to a few selections from some of the above sources):

Races of Stone
Player's Guide to Faerun
Epic Level Handbook

I forgot about Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. That'll probably count. Maybe the Wilderlands box set counts too.

From WOTC, the only things I can see being collectible would be

a) the early modules, especially the first.
b) the 3.0 PHB with the added bonus of monster sheets.

You're probably correct, especially about b because I can see those PH's being hammered from play.
