Here's one from a 1st-edition campaign that I can convert (basically) to 3.5: Elfcleave Elfcleave's origins are shrouded in mystery. Whatever they may be, its purpose is clear: to kill all elves. Although amazingly powerful, the sword puts its goals first until finally it dominates its wielder into doing its bidding. It speaks in a cool, confident voice and turns violent if its will is not met. Elfcleave is an intelligent +3 bastard sword. Against elves, the bonus of the sword rises to +6 doing an additional +3d6 damage on each attack. Any elf who tries to wield the sword is immediately striken with a 20th-level harm spell. The blade can detect elves in a 120-foot radius. Once per day, it can also cast harm at 20th-level ability upon an elf. The sword grows in power as it absorbs elven souls. All elves slain by the sword cannot be resurrected in any manner. It currently has 465 more Hit Dice of elves to be gathered before it reaches its next level of power. At that time, Elfcleave's bonus will increase to +4/+8 vs. elves (with an additional 4d6 damage for each successfully strike). The weapon is chaotic-evil in alignment and capable of speech. I don't recall it's mental stats. But each day it went without killing an elf, its Ego increased by 1d4 until it took over the wielder. It is currently disguised as a +2 bastard sword and its true nature will only be revealed if it is used to kill an elf.
