Color Spray: Wake up fool!

aww.. :( and here i was hopeing this was some quirky wording that made color spray wake up fools.. much like ray of enfeeblement makes you immune to being strength drained to death by shadows and the like..

but anyway, unconscious is not asleep.. so I would have to believe that you cannot wake them up by just slapping them around or anything.. much like stat damage to a mental stat makes you go 'unconscious' sometimes and poisons can do so as well.. plus while you are between -1 and -9 you are unconscious.. for each of these there are special rules to wake up.. same with this spell for that matter.

Without the ability to wake up the victim, I wonder if Color Spray isn't a bit too powerful. Sure, it is a cone spell, and it only has a range of 15ft. But good grief, look at the effects it has on the poor sap who fails his save.

Compare to sleep, a spell of the same level. Sure, you can place sleep more strategically, but does that really put them at the same power level?

I've been doing a lot of playtesting tonight, and that spell almost caused two TPKs. In close quarters combat, the caster can sometimes end up with three enemies in the spell's cone. In a 5 man party, a few bad rolls can result in a TPK pretty quick.

Simple question:

Can you wake up someone who has been rendered unconscious by Color Spray?

Heh. Color Spray is an awesome first 1st spell in Midnight... All those wicked-strong orcs with their cruel Vardaches (1d12+6 usually) laid low by weak Will saves two or three at a time from the high CHA Gnome Illusionist. BA-DOWWWW! Good night Odrendor... :D

And then he's taken down by an Astirax-ridden wild boar :D

How many fighters have enough ranks in Spellcraft to know they're about to be hit by a Color Spray before it's too late? Are they going to run around blindfolded just in case?

We're finding out how useful it is to have a Channeler who knows Colour Spray in Midnight. Although ours is still having the odd teething problem with aim. :D

Not too many luckily. It just happened to me several times in arena combats (low level) that people knew which spells the enemy sorcerer had...

Or players encountered their nemesis (Illu sorcerer)...

Ack. Does closing your eyes help against Phantasmal Killer????? By the flavortext yes...
