Going to spoiler tag this one in case anyone is a player in the PF2e Abomination Vaults AP.
In the deeper levels of the AP, there are opportunities for the BBEG ghost sorceress Belcorra to encounter the PCs. They first encountered her face to face 4 or 5 sessions ago which was a short encounter. She won the initiative roll, cast Phantasmal Calamity and most of the group failed or critically failed their Will saves so she did a lot of damage really quickly. She then mocked the group for being nothing and used her final action to retreat into a nearby wall ending the encounter. The group left impressed with how much damage she could cause in 1 spell, so mission accomplished. This week while exploring the 9th level of the vaults, they again encountered her. This time she sensed they had one of the lenses needed to permanently destroy her so she focused her attention on the PC who carried it. Again opening with Phantasmal Calamity, this time 2 of the PCs critically failed both their Will and Reflex saves and in 3 rounds of combat, she managed to drop one of the PCs (there are 6 of them). She was holding her own until the group's magus hit her with a critical hit on his spellstrike and did somewhere around 100 points of damage in a round. The following round I again had her retreat, content she managed to down a PC. This is my first time running a PF2e BBEG and Belcorra has a lot of good tools to challenge the party with! I don't think providing an adequate challenge with be a problem when they encounter her in the bottom level in the finale. Next session the party will start off encountering an adult black dragon pretty early on, so looking forward to getting to play a dragon to see how they hold up against a level 9 party.
