Compare a MM1 & MM3 monster

I'm still trying to figure this out.

Could someone post a monster that is in both the MM1 and the MM 3 so i can compare them and do the maths?

Otyugh MM1: +10 Stealth bonus in swampy environs while immobile. Immune to disease. Stealth Skill: +8. Tentacle: Reach 3, 1d8+6 damage, pull 2, grabbed (until escape). Bite: 1d10+6 damage, expose to filth fever

Otyugh MV: Stealth Skill: +13. Tentacle: Melee 3, 2d8+6 damage, pull 2, grabbed (DC 16 escape). Bite: 1d10+8 damage or 1d10+12 vs. grabbed creature; exposure to lesser otyugh filth fever.

They are otherwise identical.

As a quick and dirty house rule I've been increasing average damage by an amount equal to 1/2 the party's level. You could use the creature's level instead, if you want something that's more "exportable". Personally I just use that cheat because I don't have to remember the levels of individual monsters that way.

Other than that the main changes are that brutes and soldiers no longer deviate from the norm in terms of attack bonuses (so: +2 to all attacks for older brutes & -2 for soldiers). I usually just ignore the attack reduction for soldiers and then don't increase their damage as much, if at all. Also, when an attack includes situational damage I prefer to increase that over the primary damage component; often this means increasing it by the party's level instead of 1/2 level (assuming the "situation" in question will come up about half the time...).

Hi,

The monster vault and the MM3 ues the same maths. So this thread here goes over the changes between monster design from MM1 and MM3, as well as giving a few example of homemade fixed monster-though they are solos. One of which shown in the example was a home fixed Purple worm. If you compare this to the previewed purple worm from Wizards.com there isn't too many differences mathwise and the monster functioned very similarly(IIRC).

Which to me proved that the advice in that thread was reasonable solid. (I actually perfer the homefixed Purple worm)

Matt,
