PHBII is an excellent book with a lot of standard classes and races from 3.xAs far as essentials, you do not need it to play, but I would recommend the Monster Vault, as it has a lot of the basic and traditional monsters with the correct math (better than MMI)Other than that, you are probably good to go even with the basic three.
